ET on2 dancers actually stepping on 4 & 8

Well, those who can recognize musical structure, meaning they can accurately count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ... and also role of some instruments in the tune, predict changes in the music like breaks and somehow reflect all of it with their dancing in some way ... maybe I didn't use the right word, but I hope you understand what I mean

so what's the result of your analysis, is it different to mine?

Yes, of course it is. You're putting too much emphasis on one conga beat, or one clave beat. Of course, everyone hears the music his own way, so if you feel like dancing that way go ahead.

But in order to interpret the msuic well you do not have to adjust your steps to the music, you can mark those beats some other way, for example with upper body movements. Dancing is not the same as stepping.

I do.. but do you know what I meant ?.. theres a difference between the 2 .

Rhythm.. musical structure as in "bars " etc., and , Timing.. the allocation of Slows and Quicks( sub divided into numerical units ) all as in dance terms.

Numbers alone, normally only identify the weight changes, and or movements, given to a specific action and should be accompanied by time allocation. I know, Seldom taught that way .

Good point.

Over here are really distant examples of different rhythmical, musical and technical interpretation of music. The first one is very precise and other one extremely creative.

When I look at those videos I feel quite like two couples are interpreting different layers of music. First couple concentrates on rhythm and second one on "melody".

yes, that's interesting. The first song also sounds very straightforward, having something on every sixteenth note (if the steps are on eighth notes) or in other words on all counts at the speed of the cha cha cha when you dance cha cha cha :) like this
youtube.com/watch?v=i8E2th4T0GI&t=6m4s
da da da da da da da da da da ...

the couple follows that rhythm and the girl also seems to make the tap often in the pause between the two step patterns. That's a 2, 3, 4 - 6, 7, 8

The second video is more fluent and they go more for the 4.5 and 8.5 and yes, Ron Obvious, you are right. It seems like the step comes earlier, maybe even on 4 and 8 but they wait with the weight shifting / upper body movement.
but Adolfo also steps on the 6.5! I am surprised and haven't thought about the 6 vs 6.5 before this thread. you can see it well here: youtube.com/watch?v=7gxNN7MQW6s&t=37s

It's like many many house music tracks, for example "I'm in Miami, *****"
youtube.com/watch?v=2CLfJj8Dqb8
with these breaks on 2.5 and 6.5

on2 should be renamed to onsomewhere ^^

Most of the on2 instructors count like onnneee two three fiiiveee six seven

Ha ha, I recognize that so well. :-)

I think I may then to approximate a Palladium style On2 because in my region, I dance about 50 % of the dances On1 and 50 % On2. And then you probably tend to do a similar step pattern for both dance timings. Also, my On1 may tend to have a slow 3 and 7 for the same reason. Maybe, my situation is the same as one that has influenced the international salsa community in general. I'm guessing a lot here of course.

Yes, same with me. And after learning on2, I stopped pausing while dancing on1 as well. It's stg to do with muscle memory.

Well. Ie. Nery and Supermario do not pause that much On1 either.

By the way: Who are generally considered as best social leads? Who really have waiting lists in salsa festival parties? I think Nery, Milton, Shaka and Supermario all score high.

"On1 or Onsomething" and "On2 or Onsomething" is not always that different.

In my opinion there are dance styles which are more lead and follow based and styles which are more accurate timing based.

Actually both lead and follow as well as timing is needed, but which is the king? When Milton or Nery dances it is more about lead and follow and mutual rhythm. Follower follows the leader's rhythm and leader follows follower's rhythm.

" Timing ", trumps all of above.

remember the 3 Absoulutes .

Balance

Timing

Muscle

Control of each, is paramount for each and all motion in dance . Fail one ,and the others will suffer .

I dont remember seeing any top level on1 dancers pausing while dancing socially. Some do it while teaching though. Mario is one of those.

Also Mario told me once that he is dancing on2 same way like his on1. For instance in that video he is dancing on2 but as I've watched him billion times, it's like his on1 indeed. (btw, in that video he is dancing with one of the best social dancers I've met in London.)

I heard from many girls that their favourite partner is Mario. Unfortunately he never accepted to dance with me. But imo he is the best social dancer. in the congresses he never dances on the "stars" corner. He dances with everyone until morning.
