Do you like the "new" Salsa music?

I have heard Salsa Hip-Hop combos... Salsa and merengue... Salsa and bachata (...the horrid raggaeton...) Techno Salsa...

Do you guys like this new music... or are you like me, a lover of the classics...? Don't get me wrong... I'm not saying I hate the new trends... I just don't like them much

I tried getting into the new stuff, I really tried, but just when I was getting into the song, bang the mix came in and took the salsa out of the picture, and my body and soul went numb!

I was at a old cuban music club once, the band was playing charanga, when it finished the set, the DJ came on, I forget what salsa he played, well at least we taught was a salsa, just at the moment that the song was getting good. It turned into a reggeton! YUCK!!!!

All of the dancers on the floor looked at the DJ and raised their hands wondering what the heck he was doing. I mean, instantly the entire floor froze! Last time that night he played a mix anything of salsa.

Same thing happend with Plante Bandera by Tommy Olivencia at a different club. The DJ did just that, everyone stared dumb-fied of what just happend. When we looked into the DJ booth, he was laughing his booty off! He knew exactly what the reaction was going to be, and even when I dislike it, it was fun just to see the reaction off all the salseros there. hehe

You can thank your Sergio George types of arrangers for that!

Sergio George did an arrangement with DLG like that. I think it was Juliana, if I recall correctly. It not a new style/genre. It's an arranger mixing, not even mixing, more like starting with one genre (Guaguanco)and then introducing another one (hip-hop/rap). It's really a turn off for many  . But some of the new clientele (depending where you go) could careless. They'll dance to anything. It's like sitting down having an Italian dinner and the waiter come over to the table, switches your plate with a chinese entree  . You like both, but not at the same time!

I know what you guys are saying, but I have heard, and play some really good salsa with hip-hop breaks that have gone over very well with salsa dancers. I think it just depends on the quality of the music, as someone once said, there only two kinds of music, good and bad. But, then again, I do understand the need for appropriateness of style of music when you are playing to a homogeneous crowd.

Two great songs with hip-hop/regaeton breaks that I can think of off the top of my head, that I have never heard a complaint about from even the most hard-core "salsa only" people are "Dominicano Libre" by Rey Reyes and "Castigala" by Maraca. Oh yes, and Tego Calderon's version of Tommy Olivencia's "Plante Bandera". Now, come on...that's a kick-butt song, I can't imagine who would have a problem with that, even though Tego raps in the song, it's still a great song, dare I say better than the original.

Honestly, I'm a fan of all types of music. I do love the new mixes just as much as I love the classics.

I enjoy all forms and types of dance and have danced them for a long times. The new mixes allow me to incoporate some new things into my dancing. They have a lot of funky beats and breaks. Once you get to know them, you can have a ton of fun playing with your dancing and letting your body go.

I don't think I would enjoy dancing to all new stuff. The classics have to be there. Throwing a new mix into the set once in a while just adds some spice to dancing.

the only people that really catch my attention from the "new school" are marc anthony and victor manuelle (only live though, his albums are not worth the $).

Though I'm a new generation kid (17 years old) I am a fan of the old ways: Celia Cruz, Oscar De Leon, etc. The new school has some good artists, but I don't think there's a comparison here. Still haven't found a song as good as "Lloraras" or "La vida es un carnaval" (my top favourite salsas!)
Does anyone know of salsas of the same style as these? I'd really like to know.

FANTASTIC MRD!!!!! You're right! And believe me, I'm amazed!
Here in Italy,Most of italian dancer (cuban style), don't like old music! :? They prefer to dance on "new" music!!!
There's a big lack of culture!!! Sometimes, while they're listening a song, they don't know that has been made for Cuban style! They think that is a song made for dance on2,etc etc.... I think that is enough! :?

most of the old songs had a good message to them... now we're all running out of things to write songs to and.... its... just never been the same. :(

Exactly! Old music is another thing than modern Latin music! Is the truth! We can't do nothing to change it...we have only to go on to love old music!

Well, technically, most of "La vida es un carnaval" (Celia Cruz's version) is cumbia (i.e. the beginning and end), not salsa,, so maybe try some more cumbia? :D

Hey Everyone,

I'm still trying to get into the newer stuff but its still hard for me. I listen to most of it and its not really convincing, the musicans sound like there not putting comlete effort into the recording, they sound so laid back. If you listen to older stuff, it sounds like there breaking a sweat in the studio an giving 150%. and on top of that the electric intruments, like the piano & bass, sound to computerized to me. so it kind of kills it. dont get me wrong now, some of these guy sound good live, SOME, but in the studio 95% of these guys sound bored. Nothing I don't think will every compare to the classics. but thats just my opinion.

Some of the mixes being done lately are really good and they do stick to the younger crowds who prefer reggaeton. Like Tego Calderon, he does a pretty good crossover Salsa & reggaeton that everyone loves it.

I still say,Tego Calderon has a tone much like Ismael Rivera and maybe that's why this mix is good.

I personally like the mixes if the singers are good and the songs are beautifully done.

I prefer old Salsa like Tipica 73, Larry Harlow, El Gran Combo.
Even thought DLG was really into something there dont know why they broke up.
