Disapoinment

Finally got a package yestarday with several CDs I've order from internet store. Was especially excited about one album, that I've already had but with so so quality (copied from vinyl). This time it was anounced as remastered by Descarga.com (I was not buying from descarga but different site).

What a disapointment. The albums does not sound like remastered at all (or maybe was remastered badly). The trombones are flat and even worse you can here some glitches and background noise. And in one of my favourites songs there is serial distortion in the intro (exactly the same that is in version I've head before). I've made some corrections using Sound Forge in mp3 and now this fragment of song sounds better then on CD I've just got. I'm a little reluctant now about buying another "remastered" albums now.

Any thoughts?

What albums are these? Are these the Fania re-releases?

We wanna know, we wanna know...

I was disappointed by a couple of CD remastered by Bob Katz (Digital Domain Stdio), but after it other engineers were hired along with him and situation improved, also for Katz' jobs.

I dont suggest to buy the remastered version fo Willie Colon - El Malo, cause trombones are really evirated, castrated.

The same for the remastered La Réina Lupe - La Lupe, since her voice dominates the whole orchestra too much.

For these two cases, search for the old CD.

All other jobs by Emusica are good to me; and as a Dj a prefer a (well done) remastered CD so that I dont get crazy with volumes
 
The album is legendary first album by Sonora Poncena - Hacheros Pa' Un Palo. Despite the quality I would recommend anyone to have it.
 
In my experience, only a few albums have been badly remastered.

MOst of them are good; I hoper that that album by Ponceña of one of the first they worked on...
 
talking about Disapoinment... anyone heard the new Spanish Harlem Orchestra album?

there are few good songs but mainly most of the songs are quite Disapoining

I haven't had time to thoroughly check out the entire CD, but I do like the tune that I played last week: "Sácala bailar."

None of the others have grabbed me yet. In a yahoo group that I belong to, a couple people said they liked the danzón called "Danzón for My Father," but I'm just not into danzón and didn't like it much myself.

Hopefully, upon listening to it again we'll find some good songs.
 
I like the new album of SHO.
I find that Oscar and his Guys did a really good work including tracks that normally the people don´t dance nowadays such DANZON FOR MY FATHER.
the cover form MUJER DIVINA is a killer and also AHORA SI and SACALA A BAILAR.

they dare to make new compositios what the people don´t normally do today. and about the instrumentalist, they are just top of the top.

In the last two albums: "Un Gran Dia en el Barrio" & "Across 110th Street" they did normally old vesrsions, so for the DJ´s that was great because the people know them all but now... so it is easier to play them in the club. Everyone dance....


so, I like UNITED WE SWING.

The new SHO album has some nice tracks but is not, in my opinion the best. It sounds a little too forced and too clean. Its missing an essence, swing. I wouldnt rate it as one of the best of year.... now, Grupo Caribe's "Somos Caribeños" thats a different story. Anothe CD you should listen is Siglo XXI "Herederos de La Salsa Gorda"

Opinion about SHO?

Do people still have the same opinion about SHO's last cd?
I personally don't like it at all. Ever since Frankie & Herman left, the group wasn't the same. And now that Chino is not there anymore, it doesn't have that same swing. Not that Luis Quintero is bad cuz he's not. A great drummer indeed but their last album is nowhere in the top 10 for 2007.
