Dirty Dancing

Well here in the U.K the film 'Dirty Dancing' is on atm, and seeing as though we all appreciate dance, i wondered what you all thought of it?
Its one of my all time faves! Most of my female friends adore it and most of my guy friends hate it, is this the consensus?

The love story is just so sweet. And those moments on the dance floor when your with somebody and your dancing gets a bit heated/passionate, i know it happens to me and my b.f alot the music just gets you sometimes and that mixed in with what u feel and the movements...one more thing... "Nobody puts baby in the corner!" :)

Hi Salseralon. While I don't particularly care for that movie, I do think it was an important piece of dance phenomenon that we desperately need. I actually did not see it until years later which is how I see most movies, after the fact and without all the hoopla. :) I still haven't seen Dirty Dancing II.

I confess: after all these years, I still haven't seen that movie! I did notice that it was on last night. I was out having a quick snack before going dancing, and I noticed that the pub across from me had a TV on the wall showing it. I think I caught about 15 seconds of it  . Oh well, some day...

Ive seen Dirty Dancing 2 aswell, i liked that too, nice setting in Cuba (well it was actually filmed in Puerto Rico, but supposed to be Cuba) plus a nice love story again, im a sucker for romance!

You know I'd like to see a movie that had some "real" salsa in it. I know they do salsa/mambo in those movies, but its not salsa like we do in the clubs. I'd like to see a movie with some real good social dancing, it should feature people like Frankie Martinez, Juan Matos, Edie, Griselle, and all of us on salsa forums! All those movies are all so hollywood and choreographed. Maybe when I go to L.A. I'll write the screenplay for a real salsa movie. 8)

now we are talking .... wouldn't that be a present for the whole salsa comunity

I thought dirty dancing was a classic on its own way, I don't care much for the choreography ( maybe because the dance has evolve a lot since then), however it put dancing and the passion behind it in the big screen, and draw attention to the beauty of it. I saw some parts of Havana Nights and I think I saw some more salsa like feel to it, but I have to finish watching it to know for sure.

I saw dirty dancing about 7 years ago, and I remember trying to replicate some of the patterns they did in the performance, specifically there is one in which the main character, sort of slides his arm down the girl's vertically extended arm and trunk until reaching her waist, then grabbing her other arm and spinning her out to the side. I remember trying to do that with my friends over and over :)

The part I could never get was the title, dirty dancing, while that may reflect the perceptions of the era when it was filmed, I actually think that most of the scenes are pretty tame, if compared to the hip hop/raga/reggeton style of social dancing that you can see at the clubs

Havanna Nights is fabulous...not completely realistic, but it's one of my all time favorite movies. I just rented it last week again...what a movie. :-) I love a good love story, but what really touched me was how the two protagonists in the story connected first through dancing.

dirty dancing, the all time fav, one and two..its not that salsa that we dance
but at least it has screened out the luv and passion for dancing...i can watch both of em every night withut getting bored :friend:

I like Dirty Dancing and Havana nights because they try to depict salsa as it was danced at that time. Do not forget, Dirty dancing is set in the fifties, and Havana Nights about ten years later. Besides, the cast in the movies was playing the roles of amateur dancers, so it came out looking pretty realistic, I think.
