Dancing in Sheffield (England)

Anyone able to give me the low down on social salsa dancing in sheffield.

I live in Leeds and although on most nights of the week there are classes on, wednesday / friday and the weekend there is often nothing. I work in sheffield so have a train pass so getting there isnt a problem so always wondered if there was any good Friday/Saturday salsa nights.

I looked online and saw that Cubano restaurant/bar does a Salsa night from 10pm...

Unfortunately the last train back to Leeds is at 11:30 but I though (salsa addict that i am) i would go for the hour i could get. Sadly turning up I find the website is incorrect and the salsa DJ only turns up at 10:45.... making it pointless (that night at least).

Does any one (DaveUK perhaps?) can tell me if the cubano night is good and what else there is on wednesday, friday and saturday?

Also Dave when and where do you teach?

Board-member DaveFUK and Sue are Mambo collective in Sheffield. Find their class page here www.mambocollective.co.uk/Content/class.htm .

Don't know much else about sheffield

Depends what you want from a night.
If you're after an out and out quality Salsa night then don't bother.
The venue is small, attracts a lot of non dancersa as well who "clutter up the floor" :D. It casn get very full. The floor is wooden but aging and bumpy etc. The music is decidedly "Latino Party Style". Think the start time is about right since it is a resteraunt. Serves some of the best tapas I've tasted outside of Spain all at reasonable price.

If you want to go and have a drink and a bop and meet some friendly people then it's a nice place to go. Nicolai teaches lessons down there on a Saturday afternoon.

Personally I never go unless I'm out on the town or I'm going specifically to meet up with friends for a beer.

Definately wouldn't travel from Leeds AND on train!:D

As for classes see website as Sweavo said BUT they're out of date as of this last week.
Our levels 0-2 are now on Tuesdays at St Mary's venue and the level 3 & 4 are on Mondays at the Croft house Settlement venue.

Both venues are walking distance from rail station: St Mary's is 5-10min, Croft house 15-20min.

Please be aware that ALL of our classes are taught on2 and follow progressive syllabuses so level actually do build on previous levels :-)

My numbers on the website so if you want to have a chat about classes/nights out etc then feel free to give me a ring.

Thanks for the info Dave, seeing as I still have a lot to polish on1 and am also trying to learn a bit of cuban, on2 may at this stage be a bridge too far :) however you may see me in class at some point down the line :)

what would you say are the best social salsa nights in sheffield (for on1 dancer)?

To be quiet honest non :(

The regular nights are Platillos on a Sunday which when it first started was an ok night, very nice venue, nice atmosphere, music was just about passable i.e whilst the music was a bit too Cuban biased (or what people proport to be Cuban!) it did make up 60% of the night. The rest being mainly Kizomba + a little Bachata (Sheffield was probably one of the first Cities in UK to have a Kizomba scene). It's now probably 70% Kizomba 10% bachata, 10% reggaton/Latin Pop and on a good day 10% Salsaish music.

Cubanas has regular Fri/Sat as mentioned above.

There a once month night again nice venue, nice enough people but the music leaves a lot to be desired. Promotor rarely has a proper DJ of any description and hence the music is ALWAYS the same track just in a different order :) Wouldn't be so bad if they were all cracking tracks!

There was a decent 2 monthly night at Magna Science museum. Whilst the venue floor wasn't brill the surrounding where very unusually (a refurbished steel works). Music and class was always tops. The promotor though couldn't keep organising it due to his real job so it's not run for a year. Hopefully he'll start it up again some time soon.

There also used to be a monthly night at the Hubs in the centre of Sheffield.
It was a Salsa and Kizomba night. The initial couple of Saturdays where very well attended (especially by non locals) however they had a poor choice of 1 of their DJ's who dominated most of the music of the nights and he basically drove people away never to return. The numbers dropped rapidly over the next few events. The Kizomba room maintained it's numbers (still not massive though). They've not held an event for a couple of months but I spoke to the "promotor" who told me they were aiming to start it up again in the next few months. Problem is the 2 guys who run it aren't really into Salsa they're more Kizomba dancers so I'm not holding my breath.

So to sum it up - save your money and stay at home :)

Our students do visit the local venues occasionally but never on a regular basis. We all just resort to travelling to Nottingham, Manchester, Birmingham, etc.
So to sum it up - save your money buy a car and drive or go to loads of weekenders :)

I was there and he's not exaggerating!

I have friends in Leeds and there always seems to be stuff going on there. There is something tomorrow DJ Lubi I think, and at least two more coming up I think one is a tribute to Colombian salsa dance and music which is an unusual change.

Yeah in the last year salsa has been getting quite busy here in leeds. Who do you know in Leeds, I'd possibly know them...

tomorrow is DJ Lubi -" Beginners guide to Timba" Album Release party i believe

A better salsa scene is in manchester. copacabana www.visitcopacabana.co.uk offers weekend salsa from 9PM till 2 AM on fridays and saturdays. there is also a lesson for upto 3 levels from 8PM to 9PM. the friday nights are brilliant and I've been a regular for about 5 years now.

I hope the DJ has changed from the last time I was there..( thats about 4/ 5yrs ago ) .

Nope - Copas is still playing the rubbish it always has, doesn't matter who the DJ is. I would never recommend anyone go. Tues/Weds usually sees a large group of decent on2 dancers there cos Mushi has his class those evenings and they go along after to so******e but the music is still pap :(

However I haven't been for about a year so it may well have improved - although I doubt it cos I talk regularly to people that go as part of the above class and they've not commented on an improvement :D

Large crowds are no indication of quality since once you've had several beers everything merges into bland nothingness :D
