Dancing in NYC - current state of affairs?

Sabrosura

Son Montuno
So I am planning a trip to NYC in the first half of January

I am checking with my NY salsa friends but since the salsaNY calendar is not what it used to be, thought I'd ask the NY locals here as well what the current state of affairs is with the salsa events, which are not-to-be-missed -- I'm planning to go to LVG on Jan. 9, Taj on Monday, Solas on Wed, and Brooklyn Museum on Jan. 13. Also Candela and Empire potentially. Anything else good going on in January?

Also, anyone know if I can just show my EU vaccination proof (on my phone)? It shows the date of vaccination etc.

Thanks and see you on NYC dance floors in a few weeks :)

For what its worth since I'm not a local...

There's some NY DJ named "Johnny JohnJohn Acevedo" who keeps posting about events in the East Coast Casino FB group I belong to. He's NOT casino which is why I'm telling you, and don't know if his events are any good. Gotta be some On2 FB groups though, right?

As for casino, the local school Fuakatá has regular socials but I went to one a cpl of years ago and.....meh. Other ppl sometimes have casino/timba socials just haven't seen anything in awhile.

Finally, do you ever just go see live bands in NY? There's a club I've visited called Gonazalez y Gonzalez, always has top talent. Saw Los Hacheros there.

Enjoy and we expect a full report!

Thanks :) I don't really plan on doing casino while there, for me NYC is all about on2 :) But if there is casino on a non-on2 night, sure :)

Yup used to love going to see live bands in NYC in the summer when I lived there (I lived in NYC between 2008-2014). Taj used to have live bands on Mondays and I see that still seems to be going on, it's on my list :)

This is a good source for events in NYC. Wait till closer to your dates because they fill out the calendar as parties are announced. You can see how Nov and Dec are filled out, as an example: https://golatindance.com/events/cat...BheKTmfRMIJ-MrB5dbgBESqf_A4B11FuB2fkhWlKykPps

Look at the following schedules:

- Monday's at Taj
- Anything held by DJ John John. I like his socials the best now.

Eventbrite actually lists upcoming or immediate events (both free and fee-based).

So I arrived in NYC last night :)

Starting my dancing with a bang tonight, two parties :) Industry City (6 pm) and then the Empire Mambo anniversary party (9 pm) -- both with live bands!

Then Salsamania tomorrow :)

@Smiley79 @AguaDulce If you're going to any of these, see you there!

This all feels really surreal, to dance again in NYC after 3 years :)

Thanks for the heads up about IC!!!! I stopped looking after the Summer (when they hold their socials in the garden). It says 7pm: https://industrycity.com/event/live-latin-music-42/

Back in NYC for a week :)

Dance schedule:

Monday (done, that was last night): Taj Latin Mondays (with live band)
Wed: Fuakata Cuban social
Thursday: Gonzalez y Gonzalez (with live band) - with @Smiley79 joining too :)
Friday: (Havana Club in Boston, will do an overnight trip there to see friends)
Saturday: Yamulee social
Sunday: Jimmy's social

If any other SFers (or lurkers) are coming to any of these, come say hi :)

Sooo here is a video compilation of some of the live band dancing I got to do during my NYC trip :)

I was lucky that some of my dancing at Empire Mambo (Adolfo's studio) anniversary (which happened the first two nights after I arrived) and my two Monday nights at Taj got captured on video by each event's videographers, so I put several clips together in this video compilation, from five different dances (the actual videos are much longer, including a whole dance to a live band song that someone decided to film when I was dancing at Empire).

The first dance in the video is a cha cha with Adolfo :) This was the first time I ever danced with him, it happened very spontaneously as the band that was playing on the first night of his NY studio's anniversary (Empire Mambo) started playing one of my favorite songs, Salchicha con huevo, and miraculously no one was asking Adolfo to dance -- so I took the opportunity :D

Stop showing off

Stop showing off

Update: the Fuakata Cuban social had 5 people (literally) so I went to the only other party happening that night: a sensual bachata party :p

See, I'm not showing off :p At least the views were nice lol (it was in a top-floor bar on 5th Ave).

Also, on the Yamulee social Saturday there was a "bomb cyclone", so no dancing that night (the social still happened but it was a pain to get there, I gave up -- I saw pics after and it was empty, so didn't miss much...I actually was planning to go to Empire's social that night but it got cancelled due to the weather).
