Cumbia

DJ Yuca

Son Montuno
Please can anyone recommend a few popular cumbias. They can be modern or old school, although perhaps not pre-70s, as they're for DJing to a younger crowd. Colombian/Mexican/other country of origin welcome.

hi DJ Yuca

you`v probably got these ones already but they are a few of my favorite colombian cumbias

sonora dinamita - tu cucu
armando hernandez - loquito por ti
sonora dinamita - cachete pechito y ombligo
sonora dinamita - a mover la colita
calo & margarita - la colegiala (cumbia-ton remix)
adolfo - amaneciendo

if there are any peruvians in the house
bareto - se ha muerto mi abuelo (blows the roof off the house in peru)
they are from Iquitos in the jungle (its more upbeat cover of a song by juaneco y su combo)

anyone from chile (tacky "tecno cumbia" but funny drinking song)
los charros de lumaco - ando de borrachera

Thanks a million, that has made my life so much easier, to say the least. I'm going to see how many I can dl.

Any Mexican music you can please recommend? Any genre you think will be well received by a younger crowd. (I'm playing mostly salsa or else I wouldn't have taken the gig, but I do want to break it up a bit so I don't lose my audience.)

A few popular Colombian Cumbias...

Golpe con Golpe - Pastor Lopez
La Colegiala - Rodolfo y su Tipica
La Pollera Colora - Sonora Dinamita
Canoa Rancha - Grupo Niche

with a name like Yuca:eek:

lets see,
im a bit weak on mexican stuff because i have not been to Mexico (yet:D)
but i did a few Mexican gigs before and here are some recommendations i was given (not all cumbia)

caballo dorado - payaso de rodeo
el simbolo - sigue al lider
mi banda el mexicano - que pasa lupita

check out music from these bands
banda del recodo
mi banda el mexicano
kumbia kings

you will have to make the judgement calls on these yourself
probably better off asking a mexican about it because there are sure to be regional preferences and so on

also there is a Salsa version of "tequila" by a group called cubismo

:)

Great I'm going to check those. I'll hold off La Pollera Colora, I like the salsa version by Sonora Poncena too much (even though it was originally a cumbia), but the others will come in useful, thank you.

I have asked the promoter of the event for recommendations, no response yet but I only need a few so those will be fine, thanks for the help.

interesting topic..

'Mi banda el mexicano' is not properly 'Cumbia'. It genre is called 'Technobanda' or 'Technocumbia' which later on lead to a dance called 'quebradita', perhaps you can google a video :)

'El simbolo' it's kind of dance or latin-pop, very popular for dancing in parties but once again not properly 'cumbia'.

There as many varities of cumbia as in electronic and other genres but here are some songs I would suggest.

Cumbia mexicana:
Suelta el listón de tu pelo - Angeles Azules
Como te voy a olvidar - Angeles Azules
Sonora Alquimia - Pa' La Paloma
La cumbia del garrote - Los del garrote
Juana la cubana
Amor regresa - Los Askis

Cumbia colombiana:
El viejo del sombreron - La sonora dinamita
Amor de mis amores - La Sonora Margarita
Escandalo - La sonora Margarita

Cumbia & more:
Tu y yo - Thalia & Kumbia Kings (recommended)
Me llamo Raquel - Banda Machos (a mix of Cumbia&Banda)
El botecito - Los Hijos del Pueblo (Cumbia Texana)
Sabes a chocolate - Kumbia Kings
Mi dulce niña - Kumbia Kings

Hope the list is useful ;)

Although the thread is 'Cumbia' I digressed into requesting any suitable Mexican music, not necessarily cumbia.

Thanks for the lists Sunsoul and Salsera.

Thaks for starting this thread DJ Yuca. This is something that I need to explore as well to become a more versaltile dj as I know there are people out there who like cumbia.

oh! got it ;).. then if that the point, here is a new list

y todo para que - Intocable
Desvelado - Bobby Pulido
La Puerta negra - Tigres del norte
La manzanita - Los tigres del Norte
El enamorado - Los titanes de durango
Bien pedo - Los recoditos
Besito Cachichurris - Daniel Luna

Verano Azul - Juan Magan
Danza Kuduro - Don Omar
Taboo - Don Omar
Mesa que mas aplauda - Climax
Pasame la botella - Match & Daddy
El murguero - Autenticos Decadentes

I'm going to play mainly salsa at this gig, however as most people present will be Mexican and Colombian non-salseros, stuff like this will help keep them interested, thanks.

So, has anyone got any good clips of cumbia dancing? (Preferably social dancing but demos or performances will be considered.)

Much to my suprise I actually like this music - not as much as salsa but in moderation it's ok, infinitely better than the dreaded k word.

Theres a great clip on the net from an Orlando J and J comp. ( with the club attendees ) they do all the latin dances. Its about 2yrs old (?) .

I have always liked this simple social dance clip of cumbia dancing (to salsa music):

exactly

and it has the added benefit of being undisputedly LATIN which is always a good thing at a Latin gig :-)

here is a short video i recorded in Cali two weeks ago during the festival mundial de la salsa where Fruko talks about Colombia`s rich musical heritage and the significance of Cumbia across Latin America. he also inferred that the rhythm goes back as far as the Incas , (that bit is in a different video im trying to find )

once again props to DJ Ara for inviting me along to that!

That was great. Thanks for posting. It was good to see Fruko speak, again. I talked to him after his talk. He is a very interesting person and comes across as tranquil and modest, keeping in mind his contributions to Colombian salsa.

No problem, it was great to have shared these salsa encounters and events with someone who has real passion for salsa. :D

Hi DJ Yuca,

Here are a couple songs I hear pretty often at DJ'ed parties (quinceaneras, misc. social functions with predominately Hispanic crowds).

Hechizeros Band - El Sonidito
Pitbull - Bon,Bon
Prince Royce / Grupo Extreme - Whatever latest single is.

Some cumbias to add to the list

Pop / romantic cumbias ( my girlfriend and her girl friends love these songs)
-----------------------------------------------------
Marco Antonio Solis - Mas Que Un Amigo
Bobby Pulido - Desvelado

Cumbia Villera (kinda of like stoner cumbia)
------------------------------------------------------
Pibes Chorres - Que Calor. This is the original and should be easy to find a legal download. There are quite a few different versions on Youtube that I like better, but they aren't easy to find.

Yerba Brava - Pokemon, Superpoderosa, La Negra. Most of their stuffs sounds the same, would be easy to mix together.

Columbian Cumbia
------------------------------------------------------
Celso Pina - Sobre el Rio. Awesome song!
Lisandro Meza - El Adicion, El Conductor
Roy Rodriguez - Virgen de Guadalupe, El Pichirilo
Andres Landero - La Pava Congona

Misc.
------------------------------------------------------
Ozomatli - Cumbe del Muerte
Ska Cubano - Soy Campesino
