Tirso Duarte March * April 2012
Tirso Duarte is a truly remarkable talent. He's one of the most creative and innovative pianists in Cuban music history and will be the subject of at least 3 volumes of the upcoming Beyond Salsa Piano - The Cuban Timba Piano Revolution series. Duarte is also a great songwriter. One of his compositions, Charanguero mayor, was nominated among the top 5 in timba.com's reader poll for "Best Timba Song of All Time" with two others, Confianza and Riki Ricón, although making the list. His arranging talents also played a critical role in many songs written by others on two Charanga Habanera albums - Charanguero mayor and Chan Chan Charanga.

It's as a lead singer, however, that Tirso has gained the greatest recognition. He was the strongest vocalist Charanga Habanera during his tenure with them and since leaving he was recruited by NG La Banda, The Afro Cuban All Stars, and most significantly, Pupy y Los Que Son Son. by Kevin Moore of Timba.com

Mexcla Cuban Allstars Available June * July 2012
Pablo Menendez & Mezcla Cuban Jazz All-Stars "Funky... Ebullient... Hot!" (The New York Times) Mezcla has been a part of the sound-track of the Cuban music scene for the past twenty-five years. A jazz ensemble fusing Afro-Cuban rhythms, Mezcla's music is a genuine celebration of the culture and musical roots of the Pearl of the Antilles. A ray of Havana sunshine that inspired Carlos Santana to call them "the cleanest, freshest water I have ever tasted!"

"Pablo Menendez is not your average everyday Afro-Caribbean or Latin jazz musician. His vision of this music stretches back to traditional jazz and show tunes and up to electric urban blues, modern post-bop, Cuban or Puerto Rican music, and contemporary neo-bop spawned in the 1970s. As a guitarist he is strong individually in these varied styles or disciplines, but as a bandleader he stretches out even further, taking his Mezcla ensemble into these disciplines of jazz and music both beyond and including Latin sensibilities." (Michael G. Nastos, Allmusic.com).

Mezcla Cuba Jazz All Stars includes; Pablo "Mezcla" Menendez: guitar, Alexis Bosch: piano, Ruy López-Nussa: drums, Jesús Fuentes: sax, Máyquel González: trumpet, José Hermida: bass and Octavio Rodríguez: percussion

Geraldo Piloto Y Klimax Summer of 2012
One of the most sophisticated Cuban Timba ensemble. The love for their folkloric traditions and the passion for Latin jazz meets beautifully in their music. Giraldo Piloto (the founding member of NG La Banda, which was the first Timba group) drummer, songwriter and manager decided to form his own group, Klimax, in 1995. The first concert took place at the famous La Cecilia club on Avenida Quinta in April 1995.

Their unique, original sound comes from the religious batá drumming, complex jazz harmonies and horn arrangements. In the epicenter of Timba style, Klimax made a name for themselves next to NG La Banda and Charanga Habanera.

Bravo Obama!

I am really glad to read things like this. During the Bush years this would not have happened. I recall reading that Ibrahim Ferrer and Chucho Valdes, among others, were not allowed entry to the U.S. to receive Grammy awards, let alone come here to perform.

I know we're not supposed to talk politics but this is exceptional.

Bravo, Obama!
