One of the photographers that contributes to Timba.com recently returned from Cuba where he attended Cubadisco among other things. If you don't know, Cubadisco is the Cuban equivalent of the Grammys.

A couple of groups close to my heart won awards. Septeto Santiaguero won in the Traditional Dance Muisc category for their CD "Oye mi son santiaguero", and Orquesta Revé won the Gran Premio! This is the first time in Cubadisco history that a "Popular dance music" group as they call it in Cuba, i.e. salsa/timba, has won the Grand Prize. This is a thrill on several levels. First because it "legitimizes" dance music, which has always been treated as less deserving of respect. Second because I am a big fan of Orquesta Revé and they have indeed been kicking *rse over the past decade with all their releases. They are now experiencing one of their greatest moments of popularity ever, possibly even greater than their best days under Elio Revé Matos. And also just because when Elito's father died there were detractors who said that he wouldn't be able to lead the band. And now under his direction they have won a prize that not even Van Van has won. So I'm happy for Elito and this ultimate vindication of his leadership. It's also an honor for Aisar Hernández who took over as musical director a couple of albums back.
Juan Formell presented the award to Elito and they closed the event with a fancy version of Agua pa' Yemeyá including Clave y Guaguancó and the Cuban Television ballet. So check it out!
