Cubadisco 2011

Son Montuno
One of the photographers that contributes to Timba.com recently returned from Cuba where he attended Cubadisco among other things. If you don't know, Cubadisco is the Cuban equivalent of the Grammys.

A couple of groups close to my heart won awards. Septeto Santiaguero won in the Traditional Dance Muisc category for their CD "Oye mi son santiaguero", and Orquesta Revé won the Gran Premio! This is the first time in Cubadisco history that a "Popular dance music" group as they call it in Cuba, i.e. salsa/timba, has won the Grand Prize. This is a thrill on several levels. First because it "legitimizes" dance music, which has always been treated as less deserving of respect. Second because I am a big fan of Orquesta Revé and they have indeed been kicking *rse over the past decade with all their releases. They are now experiencing one of their greatest moments of popularity ever, possibly even greater than their best days under Elio Revé Matos. And also just because when Elito's father died there were detractors who said that he wouldn't be able to lead the band. And now under his direction they have won a prize that not even Van Van has won. So I'm happy for Elito and this ultimate vindication of his leadership. It's also an honor for Aisar Hernández who took over as musical director a couple of albums back.

Juan Formell presented the award to Elito and they closed the event with a fancy version of Agua pa' Yemeyá including Clave y Guaguancó and the Cuban Television ballet. So check it out!

Good one. Thanks again.

By the way, this kind of salsa or what they call musica Antillana, here in Cali, is played in certain clubs that emphasis the Cuban genres. So many times you will hear Cuban sons and guarachas, mixed with plenty of New York and Puertorican salsa Clasica.

Good to know the name they use in Colombia, important to be able to communicate clearly with people. In Cuba the official categories is Música popular tradicional and timba falls under Música popular bailable actual...these names don't exactly roll off the tongue so son and timba work best for me :)

Does this category also include reggeaton music (cubaton, salsaton)?

I don't know what category they fall into. I looked through the entire list of categories and nominations and there was no reggaeton group mentioned at all. There is a rap category but they weren't there either. So this could be the Cubadisco people being snobby to reaggaeton, or possibly the reggaeton groups simply aren't releasing CDs, just singles and videos.

the nominees for salsa were

Same here. Sometimes, referring to a genre as "popular bailable" does not do justice to its quality, keeping in mind that some of the all time immortal salsa Clasicas of today were the "musica bailable popular actual" of their time.

I also prefer to refer to the older Cuban music as Son or Son Tradicional. :)

I can't believe that Habana d'Primera didn't win anything. :(

Also the award to Elito is super well deserved.

HdP won last year for Opera Primera, and Van Van for música popular bailable Arrasando. HdP has only released the one CD.

And yes Elito's prize was well earned. I am very happy for him and the band.

EDIT: I thought the grand finale was pretty high tech for Cuba :)
