COVID-19 affected Congresses 2020 tracker

Meanwhile both the Congress of Zouk and Samba in Galicia, Spain and the Arrasando Cuban Afro-Salsa Festival in Bremen, Germany are still going ahead as planned if anyone is interested ;)
Bremen? Really? It must be smaller than the Düsseldorf Congress, otherwise I don’t see how they could run it without clearance from the Federal Health department, specifically the Robert Koch-Institute

Probably a lot smaller. I have no idea. Surprising that anything is happening in Spain or Germany. Was just looking at the festival calendar and found these obscure ones happening this week.

Crazy. Just as The WHO declares COVID-19 a pandemic
According to their website (and relying on Google Translate as German isn't a language where I have some fluency):

"The number of participants in our festival is far below the limits for events in Bremen that have to be registered or cancelled. At the parties, we will limit the number of spontaneous participants accordingly. Concerning. In terms of hygiene, we will establish a few other precautions in addition to notices. The sanitary facilities will be equipped accordingly. Disinfectants for the hands are available in front of the workshop rooms.
The Sunday party will exceptionally be cancelled this year. Owners of the pure party pass will therefore get back € 5 when checking in at the festival box office. "

Yeah, it is just not worth the risk. Not worried for myself but I am worried about bringing it to the vulnerable people in my life and in general.

Chicago Salsa Bachata Festival (CSBF) is still on.

Official response on FB:

"To the members of the Latin Dance Community,

First and foremost, Touch Events would like to extend our best wishes to the countless people who have been affected by the coronavirus. We wish you all nothing but the best and hope things get back to as close to normal as soon as possible.

Secondly, our main aim at Touch Events is to ensure a safe environment for our event attendees to enjoy Latin Music and Dance. With that said, we want everyone to know that we have been working closely with the Hyatt hotel and following the news reports within the state of Illinois, to ensure the Chicago Salsa & Bachata Festival is a safe and enjoyable event.

Currently we have no plans to cancel the event, nor has the hotel given us any indication that they plan on canceling the event.
Our event sales are the strongest ever and we anticipate this being one of our best years in spite of the difficulties presented by the coronavirus.
Touch Events and the Hyatt will work together to ensure that the venue and facilities are extra clean, however, we also encourage you, our attendees, to take extra precaution being safe by regularly washing your hands, staying home if you exhibit any of the symptoms or have come in contact with anyone that has demonstrated any symptoms of the CoronaVirus.
We thank you all for your continued support and look forward to having an amazing weekend with you.
Best wishes,
Touch Events"

So they plan to go down in flames. This Coronavirus has given us chance to observe and take part in amazing social experiment, which involves dead and crippled humans. What a moment to live in. I'll go and stock up on toilet paper or something.

Per their website, it is being held over the Easter weekend, the same time as the (now cancelled) Paris Congress.

Per a Google search, 25 cases in Illinois as of yesterday.. Plus the authorities have cancelled the St Patrick's Day parade this weekend.

Seems US is in about as bad shape as France, but with eyes closed. In state Washington though, which is one of the epicenters, they suspend salsa classes and socials. Move some of it online.

The coronavirus has really shone a light on the behaviour of promoters. Some have acted admirably, they have my sympathy, others less so.

I had a discussion with someone about the London 5 Star Congress (May 15 to May 18), thinking that might get cancelled. I thought it was too early to speculate 2 months out, but he felt it was inevitable. At this point, I think it is 50/50. It's like when you see a hurricane forming a week out before it makes landfall - you know it's going to happen, but you don't know if it's going to happen to you until it gets a lot closer, when you can more accurately predict the path and hope it turns away. You have to be prepared for the hit - but hope it doesn't happen.

I read a post/blog that highlighted the current downfall of US society of one valuing intellect and social progress for one of capitalistic ferver and self destruction as a result. This seems to only emphasize this. Will be curious if the state bans congregation of a certain amount of people, how the organizer will respond. It was interesting they highlighted how popular (and profitable) this event has already become...for now

There will be enormous social pressure to cancel the event in the coming days/weeks. Being that it's still 3 weeks away, anything can happen. An organizer's assurance that every necessary precaution will be taken is meaningless, so is their claim that they don't plan to cancel. If anything, the decision will be forced upon them.

NSR(not salsa related) Peloton cancelled their huge Home Riders event in NYC in May. Losing a boat load of dinero. $$$$$$

It feels like it is too early to speculate at the moment. But many things could happen in the next few weeks. So we will see how this plays out in the UK, particularly since the government have announced "phase 2" of their plan.

Another congress in May that might be affected is Prague Salsa Marathon. Today, Czech republic has banned entry into the country from 15 different countries. This will probably be lifted by the time the marathon starts. But if it continues, it poses the interesting scenario where the event is able to go ahead but nobody is actually able to get to it.

Probably lifted? Very unlikely. Germany is where Italy was around March 3rd with a higher increase rate. Depending on where you look currently Germany has between 2300 and 2700 cases. The case number doubled in the last 3-4 days. Back March 3rd Italy had 2500 cases and that also had a time to double of 3-4 days (but slightly slower). Expect Germany to go on lockdown in one to two weeks.
Freiburg Dance King Festival has nothing on their homepage about being canceled but I'm sure they will be forced to. I'm guessing Rovinj has only a chance if the virus reacts strongly to heat.
When experts say the good scenario is 60-70% of the Germans to get it in the next 2 years that means 48 millions in 24 months. Every month 2 million. That need to be in quarantine. Every month 200k in hospitals. Only for this. The bad scenario is faster.
I'm guessing you will only get into clubs once you have an official paper that says you already had it. In Munich not one salsa social has been canceled so far.
Boris Johnson said it, expect for a lot of people to loose loved ones.
In my life I felt 3 times like I'm in a movie. The fall of the Berlin Wall, 9/11 and now. May you live in interesting times.
