The dance he's showing wasn't very popular at the time and is pretty much extinct now, so whatever beat it breaks on is of sole interest as historical trivia. NY mambo is pretty much a different dance and has been strictly on 2 since anyone can remember.

No, interesting... makes sense on the level of cha-cha having been the mainstream social dance, though I'm not sure I see more cha-cha than son in casino the way I've learnt it today

What I found interesting in the cha-cha video is how cha cha clearly has the seeds for the pachanga dance (which some people claim to be NY original)

NB NY mambo being on 2 was taken directly from Cuban son (and Cuban mambo for all I know).
 
I find what's currently danced as NY mambo much closer to cha cha than to son: adding cha cha steps to the son contratiempo basic shifts the emphasis from 8 (and 4) to 1,2 (resp. 5,6)
 
I had a Mambo class with Leonardo last year and another one with a different teacher of his team this year. It's neither my music nor my dance. I do not feel the urge to tell Mambo dancers that they're not dancing the "real Mambo". Terms can be used differently.
