Big matter of discussion, after all those years. There is numerous Cuban percussion players teaching Guaguanco with the tres golpes on the three side, usually with the point: "as it was originally and should be correctly". I think it's up to anyone to decide. However, jazz/Mambo context also offers other types of freedom.

Funnily enough it was the Cuban drummers who arrived in NY post Mariel who insisted in the rumbas that the tres golpes must be on the 2 side. I think there was a lot of resistance at first and then it became standard, at least for younger players - many of the big names never changed from what they had learnt prior to the 50s. They're all gone now though, and nowadays in the US it seems universal to play the tres golpes on the 2 side.

I can well believe that in Cuba there's more flexibility. I don't even know if the guaguancó pattern could be used within timba, but if so I could imagine it comes wherever the drummer/band leader would like. Just like the Cubans have no problem with clave discrepancies that would be illegal in NY.

Personally, I see your point but I find it ok and not disturbing in this context.

I wouldn't say it's disturbing either, but for me it makes the whole track off slightly.
