Cha-Cha vs Son Montuno vs Guajira vs Boogaloo? Musical Differences

Los Van Van doesn't have a "special relationship" with the Cuban government, although I know certain exile groups have pushed that narrative. Van van has had songs banned from the radio just like many other groups. They have just been consistently popular and over time have developed the reputation that they enjoy today.

I'm just guessing based on what I know of most popular Soviet pop musicians. They are also talented, popular, and professional. What made difference was that besides music they were also politicians. Which gave them huge benefits. They knew how to work the machine. And achieved longevity and wealth, because of gatekeeping and including youngsters into their projects.

It took a while to appreciate timba, but mostly because the djs up here choose some real bad songs. There is some great danceable Timba out there. I'm Partial to Alain Perez and Pupi, and seen both live.
But most djs up here play timbaton, so everyone (including me previously) thought that that is what timba is, so it gets no love at salsa events.

I would have killed for some timbaton just to change it up. I wasn't impressed with many of the local DJs and their love affair with their boring instrumental latin jazz. Some DJs really like to pigeon-hole themselves into a genre. I remember one guy called himself El Romantico. Never wanted to attend any event he was DJ'ing.

Ironically now I would love to dance mostly to romanticos. Perhaps if I get my body movement and rumba game stepped up, I will appreciate timbaton more.

My apologies if I hurt you. :/
:)
Not at all! I was rather messing with you!
I‘m guilty of this myself, every day! Stuff I don‘t like = they are not good at it. Happened with Tango for half my life, until I found out it was me.

The thing is, I don‘t exactly know what you mean, we‘ll have to discuss this listening to examples while having beers. You pay. Oh, and cook something, too!
And we can also skip the listening part f you want.

Do you have a romantica you would like to dance to? I like romanticas if i'm sitting at a table at a bar with a drink in my hand or on the dance floor "south american style" without any turns.

When I started they played mostly Barbaro Fines, Lazarito Valdés, Havana D'Primera, Timbalive, Elito Revé, Van Van, Maykel Blanco. Can't recall any timbaton with an actual reggaeton/dembow beat. Of course there was the occasional "Yo vengo de cuba", or "abre que voy" but I don't know if it counts as timbaton.

I like the Havana D'Primera with FClan version of Yo vengo de Cuba, but the more reggaetonish original version less so and Abre que voy has never been a song I have liked much despite it's popularity among some crowds. It has always semed too simple for my timba tastes. I don't hate it, but it's not a song I own either.

I am liking the new Los 4 stuff too. It seems that the songs I like bests are the covers they do of songs that were already hits (albeit songs I had never heard in the original hit version). I am really enjoying Batule as a singer actually. For whatever reason I am still surprised that he can sing LOL. And the ones I like the most would be the "timbaton romantica" :) I like how they use the rumba clave intro so often :)
This is from 2020

I can't comment on the rest of S American style but in Cali if you don't lead a girl into a set of turns she will lead herself into some. Even doing one every now and again is nowhere near enough for their tastes.

As for Abre que voy: it used to get rinsed in the UK and probably still does. Tragically (for me) it is also popular in Cali. Personally I never want to hear it again in my life.

Why does any promoter hire a DJ who doesn't play a variety of sub-genres/styles within salsa? I'd say because they know the dancers don't care that much about what they dance to, but then again I've even seen a DJ drive a night into the ground and they still got hired until the night was dead.

I wouldn't mind the occasional turn, but to a romantica I would prefer no US/casino/cali studio style turns or studio style salsa in general.

I would like the casual club/street style dance:

But not:

Well I tried a couple of times and it just felt "empty", even if I am a salsa romantica fan

Second song would be so much better if these cheezy 80's synths be replaced with timba montuno or something.

Now that we're on different genres. What exactly constitutes a guaguancó de salón? And how to distinguish it from related music?

If I had no one to do more than basic steps with? Probably. Unless my partner who doesn't dance was there. Even then, just 1 song. Or if they can do simple Son.

I would first just start clapping my hands on the table, then probably dance every once in a while. Then probably listen to salsa on my way home.

If one day I become a good Cuban/Casino dancer, then I'm sure I will appreciate the music even more, as it happened with ChaChaCha/Boogaloo and most recently Son (even though I don't really know how to dance Son)

Do you really have to like Timba to become good Casino dancer? I thought Timba (80s) came very long after Casino dancing started (60s). So you will enjoy dancing to reggaeton or timbaton at Salsa or Timba parties? Or you meant you want to get good at reggaeton :P

You have to be a politician if you want to succeed in any business. In the west gatekeepers were the record labels.

.. In the 1st clip, I LOL as the guy could not find a partner no matter where he looked .
