Calling all artists!

Hi all,

As some of you know things took an unexpected turn in another thread ("salsa piano: campeones de la salsa") and we got to talking about recording our music and sending it to others to add their instruments. For example a pianist would record his arrangement and another person could record trumpet, bass, congas, timbales etc. Uing free programs like Audacity would make that pretty easy and a whole lot of fun! :)

So naturally I thought, "awesome!" But since that was a little bit off-topic I thought I'd start a new thread for musicians to get together. If that's you, please post:
1 - What you play (and/or play best)
2 - What you're looking for
3 - Any song info. or other stuff that others should know

So here's an example / model:

Instruments: Piano & ensemble (keyboard)
Looking for: Percussion, lyrics/vocals
Misc. info: My recording is in 3-2 son clave. It's an original arrangement (I wrote it).

I'll post mine here in a sec. Anyway, this idea has a lot of potential and like I said I think it'd be fun. Looking forward to hearing from some of you and hope everyone enjoys into it.

"El Conguero" :)

Percussionist / songwriter

Instruments: Best at congas but also timbales, bongos, maracas/güir@/claves, very basic piano and guitar.

Looking for: Pianists or others who play the keyboard/ensemble parts (brass etc), also singers (I write Christian salsa).

Misc. info: Even though my preference is to produce Christian music I'll gladly help with any instrumentals! :)

Like in the other thread, timbales, bass, congas, bongo, piano.

Also coro or even a lead vocal if it's in the right key (I'm a baritone apparently)

Hi, I'm a freelance trumpet player in New York City. I've worked extensively with Tony Vega, Tito Gomez, Adalberto Santiago, Cano Estremera among many many others over the past 30 years. I'm playing with Sammy Gonzalez Jr. (Louie Ramirez, Johnny Ray) this Thursday (7/22) at BB Kings (Lucille's Grill) in Manhattan if you can fall by. I'm always looking for gigs.

Hi groovetpt,

Tony Vega sings a lot of my favorites, and I gotta say if you really do work with him that's awesome! Matter of fact I'm listening 2 one of his songs rite now ("Cuestión de fe") lol. I'm originally from NY state but live in FL now, sorry =|

I'm actually learning the role of the trumpet in salsa (though unfortunately I have touse the keyboard for now, lol) and would be interested in any resources that helped you get started (websites, books etc). I don't know if you teach at all, but we could maybe hook up on Skype or something and "talk shop" lol.

The only thing tho - this isn't an ad thing. I created this post as a way for artist to connect and possibly jam and/or produce together. So this is just a shout-out 2 all u other artists on here - please keep teh advertising to a minimum. But if u got talent and need ppl 2 work with u this is the place to go! :)

I'm presently attempting to learn congas, bongo, campana y maracas - if I can manage that then I will learn the rest as and when I can acquire them.

I found a great site related to this thread:

I started a thread here incidentally, any maracas advice gratefully received:

Ooops... sorry didn't mean that post to be an ad thing. I really am always looking out for gigs and yes I really did work with Tony Vega for many years. Why would I make that up? Check your PM, please, El Conguero.

I realize this forum in mainly about dancing salsa but it is really nice to talk just music with other musicians, something I love to do. Maybe another thread could be one where we can talk about various roles of instruments in latin music in general. I'm not sure about the whole collaboration thing over the internet -- but that could have some amazing possibilities! That kind of thing has been done before.

Start that thread groovept, there's plenty we can learn from you and others. I'm sure discussion on the music is just as valid and welcome on this forum as discussion on the dance.
