Brussels

Bump

I'll be in Brussels for a couple of days (Thursday and Friday), for a much dreaded wedding and I would like to cleanse myself with some salsa. Anybody know anything?

What i've managed to find: "In Brussels you have the Wednesday parties at Montecristo (next to the Bourse, Anspachlaan), the Friday parties at Biberium and on Sunday the parties at La Tentation." (http://www.leuvensalsa.com/dp/node/288 )"

Lolita,
I think there are salsa parties at Café MonteCristo also on Thursdays. I was there a year ago and the "official" party was on Wednesday, but a lot of people asked me if I was going to be there on Thursday too, since there's a better party then. Unfortunately, i couldn't go since i had to leave next day.

On Wednesdays there's a class before the party.

Hmmmm... I am going to be in Brussels for a few days next week. I wasn't planning to dance, so, I didn't check for parties. But now that I am looking at it, it is tempting...

I had a great time there at the Wednesday party. As soon as the class was finished (i didn't participate), i got asked to dance by one dancer, then another one and another one etc. Very refreshing after Tallinn ;)
And most of the dance(r)s were pretty good too.

If you're there on Tuesday: there's a party called Jimmy's Tuesdays, which seems to be an interesting one. If you want i can try and find out more details about it. I think it's a regular thing...

I'll only be there on Wednesday and Thursday evening. But Cafe Montecristo sounds nice. No shy Estonian guys, you say... ;) I'll see when I get there. I probably shouldn't because I need to be working but it's soooo tempting.

Please report back SG and lolita - the place I'm moving to is half-way between Amsterdam and Brussels, so I'll definitely be checking out the Brussels scene come next year :)

Ok, do I tried Los Romanticos last night, and to my amusement, the place changed name and activity and became " Madame Mustache" Brussels' finest French Restaurant. (yeah do not ask, I will not be very happy eating at a Madame with a Mustache, but anyway). So I walked all the way from Palace St. Katherine to Brussels-Midi looking for Rue Henri Mause to no freaging avail so I decided to eat yet another waffle and call it a night, on my way back to the hotel I stumbled upon salsa music and when I looked up, it was MonteCristo.

They all dance on1. Some VERY cute leaders who can lead properly and with good musicality.
Floor is slow and I wished I had leather soles, music was so and so...I had mixed feelings about the DJ because he would play a few awesome tracks then some very commercial tracks.

The organizer is a very nice woman and the instructors who give the classes before the event are competitive.

Place was so dim, I could barely see my partner, but the overall ambiance was cool.

Party starts at 10 and ends at 1 (?????) so almost everyone headed for a beer (or 20) afterwards and it was good fun.

Overall, crowd is very friendly, music is almost awesome and the beer was fabtastic

Let me share my Brussels experience too. I got the chance to go to Cafe Montecristo on Wednesday which turned out to be a Cuban night. There was a lesson which went on almost until 11. I don't know if this is normal because the people started coming for the party much earlier and were just standing there waiting for the lesson to finish.

The music was not great but doable - mostly Cuban and some of it a bit overplayed. The floor was too slippery - they might have used powder. Everybody was dancing Cuban, I only had one crossbody-like dance. Some were nice dancers but most at lower intermediate level. I guess the cute musical leaders lolita was dancing with stayed at home this time.

One thing is certain though - everybody was very nice and friendly and make you welcome immediately. I knew nobody but practically got asked from the moment I stood up until after I changed my shoes to go. Everybody was smiling and was clearly enjoying the dancing so you really don't care about the levels, it was all fun and laughs.

I wanted to investigate if there was anything happenning on Thursday as well but the dinner went on forever (in Belgian style) and I just went back directly to the hotel.

Brussels it is again! :D I have to be there at the end of June for a couple of days and might have the chance to go out on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday night. Wednesday sounds most probable at the moment. So is Cafe Montecristo on Wed still going on? And anything at a central location on Monday or Tuesday?

Thanks! :kissme:

Heya :)
No, Montecristo is now on Thursdays.
There is a bar called Cartagena, which is in the centre, i heard they play salsa there every night, but i don't know what kind of crowd goes there and whether it's even worth visiting: http://www.cartagenasalsabar.be/contacts.html Probably your best shot is on Tuesday, cause if the party called Jimmy's Tuesdays gets cancelled again, people would probably go there.

And on Wednesdays there is a party at a place called Le Bouche a Oreille, Rue Félix Hap 11, 1040 Brussels. But it's not in the city centre, it's close to EU quarter. It would be about 10 min by taxi from the centre. Those parties used to be quite nice during last summer and early fall, but i haven't been there since October, so don't know what are they like now.

Oh, pity. I doubt I would be able to do anything on Tuesday. On Wednesday it seems I'll be in EU quarter during the day but I'm not sure I'll want to go back there in the evening.

So, how is the salsa scene there in general? Which are the best parties? Just curious, I cannot change my dates unfortunately.

And thanks for the info, very appreciated :)
