Beginning the dance

I don't see any instruction presented on how to start a dance. Granted it's not a complicated thing. But I'm sure there are more and less elegant ways to do it. Watching social dance videos very rarely you get to see the very beginning of the dance so no help there.

Personally I have a few approaches, which can initiate/flow smoothly directly from the walk on to the dance floor. If already facing the partner I tend to start rocking on the chord beats in closed position - into a cross body lead, as that's what I first learned in Casino.

Looking for new ideas on starting the dance with a nice flow. Link to videos would be great.

Most of the time dancing videos on YouTube start recording after the dance has started.

I don't prefer starting dancing as soon as we are on the dance floor (a few bars have already past). Ninety percent of the time I ask after the music has started.

Depending on the intro music, I might start with a range that consists of dancing apart to close hold until the start of the phrase where it makes sense to add CBL.

The initial part tells a lot about the type of partner and kind of dance to lead. Especially how musical the partner is and how much they are comfortable playing with the music as well as add playfulness to the dance.

This is how it's done:

It also shows how to enjoy dancing to songs over 4 minutes long (something so many of today's salsa dancers find impossible).
