Anyone been to Istanbul Dance Marathon?

Thanks. I don't know who she is but I did look at one of the more recent vids on YT

Before Covid she wasn’t known internationally much. She was influential in SPB. I had danced with some of her students, who are among my favorites followers back then and had become friends.

This one of Svetlana is just some months old and more interesting:

Thanks. I was looking for a recommendation, since I don't know who she is and was curious to see what people thought was a good representation of her social dancing and/or uniqueness.

I rarely look to dance with instructors, unless it is someone that I know personally or get a "dance with me" vibe from, but it's good to find out who these instructors are, incase I find myself at the same event with them.

I am sure that video was posted somewhere on the SF before.

Most of my dances with so called celebrities and instructors have been serendipity. I only came to know after the fact who they were. Not knowing in that sense is a bliss. On the dance floor they are just like any other social dancer. Of course I knew she was going to be in Vienna but can’t remember if she was teaching. Nor was she a recognizable name to many except those who went to Russian festivals.

Perhaps she was not that popularly known before Covid shutdown.

She gained international popularity during Covid. Now that she travels a lot outside of Russia more people are becoming privy to her. I don't think she has broken into the US market though.

That’s why I emphasized pre-Covid.

USA is huge. I am not sure how lucrative USA festival market is. Without festival market how does anyone break into the USA market? I don’t know. Magna at her height was virtually unknown on the west coast. She was much better known in the Europe than on the west coast or in parts of the USA other than the eastern seaboard.

The things have changed since then with the social media where people can discover and get discover. I think that has been the biggest change in last dozen years.

How does anyone get discovered?

The online market is saturated with videos. Even with social media, it isn’t easy to become known.

Svetlana was unique in that she put the focus on her students. I found her through her students, not the other way around. You will rarely see some kind of promotion of her dancing.

With most artists, the focus is on their dancing and on their performance, but this kind of exposure is a dime a dozen. You really have to be exceptional these days to stand out.

I can no longer watch any Salsa teacher give pattern lessons online. It’s mind numbingly boring and there’s rarely anything of substance to be learned.

I have no idea how these Bachata couples get so many clicks as they are all carbon copies of each other (from my perspective, but maybe it’s different with Bachata market compared to Salsa market).
