Am I in over my head and overestimating my abilities?

As you know from my previous posts, I’ve been dancing salsa for about a month and a half now.

Last week I hit in all time low having two embarrassing dances back to back socials when the follower walked out mid dance.

I reflected on my mistakes from the past social and applied by learnings this weekend.

I think I was did pretty well. Followers seemed to actually be having fun when dancing with me. Some followers who danced with me in past socials told me they were impressed by my improvement. For several dances I was verbally commended for my dance skills. A few even said I was a good lead with clear signals. Maybe they were just telling me that as a pleasantry but many followed to my surprise did seem to be satisfied.

I guess all I did was prioritize follower safety and stuck to moves I was comfortable doing: my combos mostly consisted of combos and some basic variations of cbls, right and left turns (both leader and follower), a few hammerlock variations, inside turns, under the bridge, and enchuflas, and some copas. Also really made sure to keep timing.

Am I in over my head with my assessment or could it be that I’m just improving fast?

I’m just trying to get better at salsa lol. I didn’t say I was good. Obviously it takes time to get good.

All I said is that I went to a couple of socials this weekend and they seemed to go pretty well. There are people who have about the same experience as me (a bit over a month) and are better than me lol. And plus the timeframe doesn’t account for the fact that since I’ve started I’ve been practicing salsa for like 20 hours each week.

All my posts refer to a first person experience so I have to use “I” to reference the subject.

He can make a single thread titled “my salsa journey as a beginner, experiences, feedback and advice on how I can improve” since he loves long descriptive titles. A short title could be “My salsa journey”.

He reminds me of that other dude from a few years back who was always creating a new thread on his dancing.

Sorry didn’t realize it was better to make a single thread. I’ll do that from now on.

I take the opposite view of @Offbeat and @MamboJazz .

I do not like threads that weave through 10 topics and each comment parses some minute angle of a portion of one topic. It is a waste of time for me to figure out what a new comment is responding to in the history of the thread.

This forum language is in English. In German it is quite common for people to use the third person singular when referring to their own experiences. In English it sounds totally weird to do that. If it is a personal experience, it should be labelled as such. When people turn their experience into a third person singular comment, they are trying to add authority or validity to a statement that it does not have. In German we call that "Besserwisser".

As to the title of the thread and topic: Yes you probably are overestimating your abilities but that is normal for everyone who goes from zero to 10%. That is (mathematically) an infinite improvement.

I learned what dunnig-kruger was from this forum, from a com.ent Offbeat made and sabz backed up about someone else in their thread. I assessed mynown posts and realized I suffered the same problem. Thatbis when I assessed my skills, realized I'm still lants and have scaled back my posts to the bare minimum.

In my scene there are a few newer dancers taht got pretty good fast, and started winning medals at heats in congress. They now speak with authoritative tone. Turns off the older heads.
I believe in salsa all but the strongest willed person over estimates their abilities and becomes a teacher. It is the way.
