Airport Salsa

PARIS (Reuters) - Parisian airports are offering free dance lessons in their terminals this summer to help passengers get into the holiday spirit, the company that runs the airports said on Thursday.

"So if you're flying to Cuba you can learn salsa and if you're flying to New York you can learn hip hop," a spokesman for Aeroports de Paris (ADP) said.

The lessons last 15 minutes and passengers hear music and instructions from teachers through headphones. ADP said 4,000 people had already enjoyed free classes since the scheme was launched in late June.

Classes take place all day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on busy summer weekends and an ADP statement said Oriental dance, mambo, modern jazz, rock'n'roll and tango were among the styles on offer in addition to salsa and hip hop.

The spokesman said Latin dances were proving the most popular so far.

Surely they've got that mixed up. If you're flying to New York, you need salsa, if you're going to Cuba, you need son and casino!
:P

Wow, I had to spend a lot of time at airports in the last two years and it was always very frustrating to sit around for hours and on every occasion I was daydreaming how great would it be to some salsa party around and thought it could be a good business idea.

Lessons are less interesting, but I think real parties would give excellent opportunity to dance with unknown faces from all around the world. Additionally, a bit workout before a long flight would help to prevent or improve circulation problems and stiff muscles.

I for one, welcome any development in this direction.

Just try sneaking in your water past TSA!

Water = difficult
Yourself* = no problem

*A collegue at work told me how he got waved right through. He happened to be wearing his usual black dress slacks, white shirt, his company employee badge on a neckband, plus he looks like the typical TSA type. He walked right through but was shocked that it happened.

Perhaps they needed to provide a distraction from the mess of CDG

Aha! The one time I flew through CDG, the baggage handlers' strike started just as we were landing. They kept us on the runway for an hour, and then a rude frenchwoman yelled at us to run through the entire airport to get on the next flight. When I'm not running, I usually just read and do yoga. 15 minutes wouldn't do much when you're there for 1.5 hours. I like the idea of getting professional massages (not the chair ones, but I've seen real spas in some airports). If I had enough free income, I would just schedule a 30-60 minute massage at every airport I fly through.

I was flying, driving, travelling every week for a job I had in 2000-2003. It was fun at first* as all of my vacation trips were various vouchers, bonuses and mileage awards. I didn't spend any of my own money for three years. The most fun was Southwest Airlines, this was before I found out that they were faking their maintenance records. One of the best lines during the safety presentation was: "The little button with the light turns on your light, the little button right next to it does not turn on the flight attendant".

Luckily thats all in the past.
*The job itself sucked, 0% support from headquarters. I felt like the lone ranger in the prairie.

when i saw the title of this thread it reminded me of an occasion a few months ago when i was traveling. i was in the departure lounge reasonably close to a latin restaurant with music playing. since i'd just been bitten by the salsa bug, i inevitably felt the urge to break out into a shine so i made my way to a fairly secluded spot in between terminals (while still hearing the music) and broke out into my baby shines..not sure if anyone else saw me...nor did i care..they didn't know me.

There is a club at the Int'l airport calle Buffalo Wings, featuring live bands. On Wednesdays & Thursdays its Salsa night. Fridays its merengue & some salsa*. Saturdays its rock. Since they offer free parking, it gets packed on Fridays & Saturdays. Plus it's right on the airport and the waiting is less.

* Merengue & Salsa crowds differ here in Puerto Rico. While some of us, dance to both, but the crowds are waaaayyy different.
