agustin arce

I believe ARce was from Puerto Rico.

He released three albums that I know of, all on Borinquen records.

1) Si Echo Pa Lante
2) Apeate y Oye
3) Stop and Go

All of these are heavy duty funky 1970s salsa. Many tracks have a really hip electric organ/piano montuno that really swings.

I think there was also one in the 1980s which is not as good....

I do not know anything about him personally.

PS - I have seen the first album on Bootleg CD in Puerto Rico.

Bootleg?

You mean that original CD doesn't exist?

I renounced to win an Ebay auction (it costed 40 dollars) because I was told that an original CD existed, though rare...

Claudio,

not sure if the original CD of his first album exists...I only saw a bootleg in PR (although it was being sold ina regular store).

I asked this question many a time after hearing Echo pa' lante for the first time in 2003-2004. Nobody knows much. Even got an email response from Larry Harlow, along the lines of "the name rings a bell...can't help you."

Did manage to acquire all three Borinquen releases, including Apeate y oye and Stop and go. The last conversation on this topic took place winter 2005 in Naguabo, Puerto Rico. A drunk piano player was diddling around by the Malecon and I offered a CD of some obscure recording to his driver. The driver reciprocated with a live Barretto recording and we started to talk.

Somehow the conversation turned to Arce. "He's gone," was the reply, with a point to the head, indicating gone in mind but not body. Living in Santurce, I believe but gone "due to drugs." Perhaps this is irresponsible of me to post; however, the guy didn't seem to be making stuff up. Curiously, the savant pianist that night had done some time with Harlow's band, although as a fill-in for Harlow himself. At least according to my new friend at the time.

We drank all night until I got in a pissing contest with his friend for reasons I will not discuss. Good times.

I don't know a lot about Agustín Arce. The only song that I have by him is on a comilation that I picked up at one of the salsa congresses. I would love to find out more about him.
