A 'Birthday' Request...

Hi all,

The forthcoming week ahead is my salsa birthday... it will be my very first anniversary since I stepped foot into a salsa club and took my first ever lesson at absolute beginner level. Salsa-me is going to be 1 year old!

I would like to ask everyone for a personal request if I may – (not that anyone here owes me a favour or anything) and I’m sure many of you do this any way but... when you go out to dance during this week, please be on the look-out for that slightly awkward, nervous, timid beginner at their very first lesson. Ask them to dance and encourage them. You never know if you might be the one who sends them along the path to becoming a salsa addict!

Finally dragging myself into that club for the first time was one of the hardest and best things I have ever done. Coming back for more the following night comes in at a very close second. Since then I have hardly stopped dancing – can’t believe it’s been a year already! It's been a rough ride at times, but immensely fun and very enjoyable.

We all know it’s brilliant, so share it! Keep on dancing, have fun and enjoy!

Heyy it's my birthday too! 9th of May, monday :) Where will you celebrate? Probably I will celebrate it on Tuesday as well at Boston bar since we are like a family with the people there.
I'm a little bit older than you though, 1 year 1 month old :P

I remember last year, I couldn't tell anyone that day was my birthday since I was so scared of that birthday dance :) Now I'm looking forward to it!

And regarding asking a beginner, I'm agree with you and I try to do it always! I feel like I should payback to the community by encouraging and motivating more people to salsa.

Happy birthday!

How would anyone know that someone is at their very first lessons :)

Aside, everything we say on this board, in my observations everyone gets asked to dance. I mean every awkward nervous ugly duckling gets asked. I have yet to see someone who simply doesn't get asked to dance during the night.

Great post, great request and Happy Birthday.

Many people forget where they started, when it comes to salsa dancing, that unfortunately includes the "professionals", those who can actually dance salsa for real, that is.

I have lost count on how many times I have seen wide eyed initiants and even intermediates looking at salsa teachers, hopeful that they may be asked for a dance, but ending up ignored by these characters, some of whom will only dance with partners who will make them "look good".

Those salsa dancers who do not dance with the beginners should be banished forever to the Siberian Salsa Congress where they will be condemned to be spun senseless for the rest of their days.....

Crikey! Those were by me???

It's funny, having re-read my original post in those... I still find I have most of the same questions and apprehensions! It's as if nothing has changed - BUT clearly they have.

Hehe. Feel the fear and do it anyway. A little bit of fear is what they call excitement! :D

Happy salsa birthday, suitz!

I cannot promise I'll be dancing at all this week but if, I do, watch out nervous beginners! :P I'll be gentle, I promise... :D
