    Random Thoughts

That moment when you're freaking out and then you realize you've mis-tagged half of your Salsa collection as "Latino" and not "Salsa"

    Random Thoughts

Every time I go to some small music store to buy some claves, it's always their last set of claves, and just to fake me out there's always a huge stack of those plastic flute/recorders?!?!?

Why are most people intimidated by shines?

I agree, for partner shines, you don't need to do anything special, just do the basic partner moves you already know as shines and go from there. For me though, I still think solo shines are different from partner shines. Yes, they are the same moves, but the mindset is different. I remember my...

Why are most people intimidated by shines?

As for Cali, the Salsa world is a self-selected group of social dancers, so shining isn't as high a priority. On the other hand, I gotta wonder what would happen if you introduced Cali dancing into the Hip-Hop / B-Boy world, I think it might catch on much more quickly.

Why are most people intimidated by shines?

Maybe if they offered a different format for shines classes it might be a different story. Even when you take a shines class, you're basically line-dancing, you're not actually practicing shining with a partner. So the skills required to stay connected while dancing aren't really practiced. I...

Why are most people intimidated by shines?

By one-on-one I meant shines during a partner dance. I was trying to come up with a word that was different from just doing shines "solo", which to me sounds like there is no partner.

Why are most people intimidated by shines?

I think people are intimidated by dancing shines one-on-one. People seem much more comfortable joining a line-dance or doing shines solo.

I can do the steps ... so that means I have the correct technique.

Are there any dangers to spinning? (and other assorted questions)

The slap from your partner after you drop her on the floor can cause brain damage :)

    Buzzing from last night . . .

I love that! Of all the dance highs, that one is very nice. Felt it last night, dancing on beach while it was raining. :)

Anybody But Me Ever Dance Salsa to Ray Charles?

Lots of rhythms in there to play with, makes me want to lindy or jive but I could see throwing in mambo and syncopated cha cha cha steps too. There's even parts it would be fun to do the funky chicken :jimlad: ok, now that songs gonna be playing in my head the rest of the day. I'll have to load...

Adjusting leading technique vs turn patterns

By "pre-lead" I was thinking of the upper body movement / weight preparation that occurs right before you actually step and make a weight transfer. In a CBL, it would be the turning of the shoulders on the AND right before the step to open up the body. I don't know if "pre-lead" is the correct...

Adjusting leading technique vs turn patterns

Tracing is letting your hand or finger stay in contact with your partner so that it slides across their body as they are turning or moving.

Adjusting leading technique vs turn patterns

These things don't always work, but worth a try. - Try making the "pre-lead" extremely clear and drawn out, that can give the follow more time to respond. It can also make the dance smoother and less fatiguing. - On the recovery side, I try to give the follow a sense of confidence by tracing...

    left vs right turns

I feel like most beginner follows are more comfortable doing right turns.

    Frustrated from last night... :-(

Yes that's happening in my local scene too. The bachata/kizomba crowd keep hijacking the Salsa event, everything runs pretty smoothly until they show up, and then you see them approaching the DJ with requests.
