Does this type of Cuban Salsa movement have a name?

This is so typical of Cuba "ballroom" dancing. In reality, you won't see this much in Havana at least, because the floor is usually too packed. It's really a newer version of "despalote" which was popular in the "special period" or what I call the great era of Timba vs Son Moderno. Adalberto vs...

Does this type of Cuban Salsa movement have a name?

Man, as a non-dancer, this forum enlightens me. I didn't know there were names for these moves, but I guess that makes sense. The closest I come to learning to dance is from my Cuban wife and she just says, I have no idea, I learned as a baby. Good thing I'm old now, and am not expected to be...

    Co-opting of the "mambo"

While I agree that the dance culture and media codified the terms, they are still incorrect. I recently saw Tito Puente Jr., and he still calls almost all his fathers music "mambo". I also want to point out that Mambo, at least in the Cuban sense, is not in the Son genre. The mambo and...

    Co-opting of the "mambo"

Yep, what the majority here calls Mambo, is really, New Yorican Salsa. Mambo it's not. This is mambo

Complicated instrumental played at Live2Mambo Budapest

Guaguanco is the most important o f the Rumba genres and is the most accepted, practiced and preferred by both dancers and musicians. It is a couples dance of seduction with the male dancer gracefully trying to seduce his female partner, who avoids his every move until, when she is not expecting...

Orquesta Son Mujeres, “Salsa in the body of a woman”

That I don't know. I'm sure they split up. I'm pretty sure the bass player was my friend's girlfriend, but that was long, long ago. I'll ask him though.

What makes a bad Salsa band?

"Using a drummer and no other percussion (where they saw this I don't know)" There are plenty of drummers that can play with no percussion ;) Enrique Pla, Samuel Formell, Leo Mena etc. But, I agree, most bands need percussionists, not drummers.

Orquesta Son Mujeres, “Salsa in the body of a woman”

Nice! I can really hear the Colombia feel in this. So different than Cuba or PR. I assume you know about Banda Divina de Cuba? The tumbao is very Cuban.

    Issac Delgado’s funky salsa

While there is no doubt about "some" funk influence. It's really Timba. A truly Cuban version of "salsa". I know many of you may disagree, but, everything changed when Jaco visited Cuba and the music shifted from what could have been (Abalberto Alvarez, etc.) The death of Modern Son. vs

    New timba

I'm also pretty sure the timbales were Vizcaino, but I don't have it on the track sheet. I'm much more anal about that stuff now. Things moved so fast and I figured, I'd never forget.

    New timba

Yes, now that you mention it, I'm pretty sure you are correct. It was a long time ago :D

    New timba

Well, I did a timba version of Cielito Lindo back around 1998 at ICIAC. I finally released it along with some other archival tracks from 1998 - 2004 as I get my master rights back. BTW, you can get the whole album free (pay what you want). It's called Tierra Caliente...

Bemba Colora means Big Red Lips?

Yep, as someone with a label, it's time has run out. It's too bad, but most of the tracks I have sell almost nothing. At least I am not stuck with CD's anymore (I threw them out when I moved). There is still a small market, but certainly not one that many can make a living from.

Bemba Colora means Big Red Lips?

Oh, and Celia Cruz wasn't the composer as many wrongly promote. It was José Claro Fumero

Bemba Colora means Big Red Lips?

Celia first recorded it in 1966 for the record Son con guaguancó, then in 1974 with Tito Puente There was also a song by P. Justiz recorded by Diablo Rojo y Su Conjunto in the 1950's, but I doubt it's the same, mainly want to point out it's a Cubanism In 1960 something Celeste Mendoza also...
