Where to dance in Puerto Rico?

#1
HI!!
I'm planning a visit to Puerto Rico soon (x-mas season) and I would like to know all the really good places to dance in Puerto Rico.

How is the social dancing there? Can I go alone dancing and have fun?
All the details please.
I will be visiting familly, but I would like advice from those of you who visit PR.
You're help will be appreciated.

Yes, check with emoyeno. She was a big help in giving me advice when I went to PR last summer. Two places that I can recommend are the Marriot Courtyard in Isla Verde, and if you want to be more adventurous try El Balcon del Zumbador in Pinones.

Thanks, I've seen her posts. These are highly recommended.
How is the dancing over there???? Are there only On2 dancers like everyone says??

#5
Everyone in PR seems to have their own style. You will see On2 NY style dancers, On1 dancers, old school Puerto Rican style dancers. Most of the people who dance On2 can also dance On1, unlike many of the newer On2 dancers in NYC.

Here is a list: There are new places that have recently been opened and gained popularity thanks to Facebook. (It's free publicity for events and it gets to people. I'm astonished how a venue announces an event and people flock to it)

anyway for X-mas season, there will be plenty of events. I will post them.
as for social dancing... many dancers are On2, but they all know On1. Locals looove LIVE bands here. So I suggest you attend places where live bands are playing.
This list is in spanish and english (sorry I'm bilingual!!)
Enjoy

Emoyeno,

Thanks for your list.

We will be in PR the first 2 weeks of January. What will be going on for el Dia de los Reyes? I hear that there is always a great concert on Jan. 5 but cannot find anything on the Internet. Maybe I do not enter the right keywords?

Does anyone have any recent updates for what will be going on between Jan. 1 and 13?

I have the latest salsa newsletter from abailarsalsapr but there is nothing for January yet and the next edition will be Jan. 7.

I don't want to miss out on anything...

Check in with abayarde on the salsa music subforum here, he seems to have the inside news on live music in PR.

You might want to visit the beach in Isla Verde and catch the Nuyoricans vacationing and dancing during the day. Also, check the San Juan hotel lobby in Isla Verde where the have the Salsa Congress. Once you link up with the people from the Bronx there, you will find the On2.

Your family will probably know about non-touristy events for the holidays?

Emoyeno,

I have some very good friends in Caguas and Aguas Buenas. They've invited me to stay with them when I next go to Puerto Rico. I don't know the geography of the island well enough to know which of the places you recommend are closest to Caguas/Aguas Buenas. Please tell me.

#13
El Caobo:
Let me know when you will be visiting Puerto Rico.
If you're staying at Aguas Buenas, it's pretty much centric and countryside. You WILL definately HAVE to drive to the metro area if you want a lot of salsa action, but the drive is not much. I suggest you use google maps and check the locations, so you may have an idea where you will staying.

Caguas is very close to Aguas Buenas and is considered metro area, and there are very plenty of good places to dance during the week. Weekends I suggest you visit San Juan area. Anyway let me know the dates you'll be visiting, so I can try and find any special events that might be going on.

Update:
There's an upcoming main salsa event on January 31st. It's a big one eveyone is talking about it.

Hi All,

I will be going down to San Juan next week. I will be staying in the Marriot between Old San Juan and Isla Verde, so looks like the Courtyard is still the best place to go? Tripadvisor suggested Nuyorican but said need to be really late. I am looking for a place where there are real salsa dancers, local or not, so can someone provide the update as to what are the hot spots for Thursday, Fri, and Sat?

#16
The above places are still pretty active.
I double checked with my contacts in Puerto Rico.

The most reliable place to go is the Courtyard at Marriott Isla Verde, the one after the Ritz Carlton.
That's where the salseros go to on Friday nights.
Niuyorican Cafe is still active, actually is the only salsa place in Old San Juan.
There is a place in Caguas, but Im not sure. I will have to check again.
There is a club called Redline for Tuesdays
and Aché on Thursdays.
will give you address shortly

Here it is
Redline
210 Calle Eleanor Roosevelt, 00918
San Juan
787-963-0430
-----
Aché
191 Calle Diez de Andino,
Santurce
787-460-0322

Look both of these on Facebook, make sure you on the search engine you write the street name and it'll come up

#18
There is also the Buffalo Wings at the Airport (free parking all night long with stamp)
You will have to check there, ask the bartenders when is salsa night
I use to go there a lot it was really fun.

#19
Thanks Emoyeno,

Seems like the sure bets are still the Courtyard at Marriott and the Niuyorican. Good to know the Courtyard is popular on Fri, but maybe I will call the hotel to check about other nights as well.
I will report back here on my findings, leaving tomorrow, yeah..

I know this is in Spanish... It's a quick reference guide I got from my contacts in PR.
I will translate shortly. (I have to translate correctly! ) ;-)
