Counting a little differently with Captain Salsa

Counting a little differently with Captain Salsa

Yeah, but since he learned salsa from NY guys, which supposedly made him a salsa expert, one would expect him to use the same technique and terminology. In the video we discussed in other thread, he actually demoed double right turn NY style with a follower I BR, right turn is usually named...

Counting a little differently with Captain Salsa

Interesting. As I understand, he learned salsa in NY. However : - the move he calls single right turn is what FM calls basic right turn - the move he calls double right turn looks different than the move FM calls double right turn What a mess ...

Counting a little differently with Captain Salsa

Swing timing isn't really applicable to afro-cuban or carribean dancing I can think of (maybe I overlooked something). It's used a lot in jazz and blues, and dance genres using that kind of music - various swing versions including ECS, WCS (old stlye WCS music I mean, while new one is usually a...

Counting a little differently with Captain Salsa

Only 2 records in pro (forgot the result), the rest amateur Relation between am and pro is however now considerably different than in my BR days, most competitors in Europe are in WDSF and the newer go to WDC pro (like it was a common path) , some of them go to WDSF pro for something like a...

Counting a little differently with Captain Salsa

Checked his BR compettitive history (90-03) btw. A few finals on polish competitions, no wins recorded (as stated on his web page), while on bigger competitions, a lot of scores like top 70, top 144, top 80 etc ... meaning he was mostly out on first round ... lot worse than one would think...

Counting a little differently with Captain Salsa

Well, every bigger city has some competition winners I suppose . But watching his body movement video around 15min, it looks like main idea is to devastate the floor, with dominant action being a kind of opposite to most I was ever taught about afrocuban things. So people are getting the wrong...

Counting a little differently with Captain Salsa

I learned not to bother with teachers that teach in a way that is not understandable to me. I stick to those I can understand and are that are happy to try explaining something different way / answer questions that I ask / demonstrate / help me feel the needed action by dancing with me as leader...

Counting a little differently with Captain Salsa

Body action that happens on particular beat ("1" for instance) obviously starts earlier. In BR standard, english waltz for instance, we have 2 bar preparation to start on beat 1 of simple basic right turn ... I've seen various ways to dance bachata basic step that differs in precise moment when...

Counting a little differently with Captain Salsa

As he explained, it's how melody goes (which I agree) However, video is titled how to count steps in bachata, but it's actually how to count beats in bachata music as no dancing / connection of dance and music is shown (not unusual in BR as well) so it's pretty much useless for what one would...

Counting a little differently with Captain Salsa

As I understand and from what I've seen on his clips, he danced some ballroom prior to salsa Part of BR teachers like to divide beats into halfs (&) and quarters (a) as a kind of teaching method, trying to express some association/connection of particular foot/body actions with particular part...

Don't focus just about Mambo or Salsa on2 because that's just 20% of what the salsa word means for real

The same with me. I know a few people that listen to the music because of "strong lyrics" / "message" even if it's total crap from musical viewpoint, but for me, it doesn't work Hard to say about percentages and sample of people that I know (their musical preferences I mean) is small, but...

Leaders, where do you put it and ladies, where do you like it?

That theory may be suitable for some styles of salsa, especially those where leaders power the followers' spins, but not all ... for instance FM insists on light leading and lower position of the arm on her back, so it is less important. Might be suitable for BR latin as well. In some genres you...
