Why the hate for salsa romantica?

This is not at all salsa romantica - you can't put that on everything Frankie Ruiz sings, or everything from the '80s. First of all, the theme of the song has nothing to do with romantic love. Second the music doesn't utilize the stylistic/musical elements you'd find in a romantica.

Understanding the language of the music you're dancing to

I completely feel you on this...to a point! So of course I can't blame someone for not growing up with it. But I do think it's the job of those who do understand the cultural value of the music and dance to educate others around them, and by extension to educate them on the broader culture so...

Understanding the language of the music you're dancing to

Thank goodness Tite Curet Alonso, Ruben Blades, Oscar D'Leon, The Lebron Brothers, etc. etc. etc., were not relying on you (and many others in this thread) for advice on how narrow a lane their music should inhabit, or we might indeed be left with a genre comprised only of Disney-fied songs...

Sabrosura's favourite salsa tunes (plus those of anyone else who cares to contribute)

    2017 NY Salsa Congress

Saturday Night Recap: Much, much better than Friday night, and this was the consensus among everyone I'd spoken to. Starting with Johnny Ray. Lots of romantica in his discography, of course, and while I don't have an issue with the genre, what recordings I'd heard of his left me cold - it was...

    2017 NY Salsa Congress

Quick updates on the state of play here so far: 1. ORGANIZATION: Continuing from last year's success, the organizers seemed to have figured out the logistics, generally speaking. Kudos on that - I know it's not easy, and they've been smart on building partnerships, marketing, etc. They also...

    Repairing Salsa Cred

I'd say you regain confidence by focusing on what brings you joy about the dance. At the same time, know that social dancing is a low-stakes game. You most likely don't make your living from it, you're not saving someone's life, etc. Finally - engage musically with your dancing. The simplest...

RIP Enrique 'Quique' Lucca Caraballo - Founder of La Sonora Ponceña

Absolutely! Was the first of their songs I ever remember hearing, and it grabbed me right away.

RIP Enrique 'Quique' Lucca Caraballo - Founder of La Sonora Ponceña

Let's post up our favorite Sonora Ponceña songs in his honor! To start, the amazing "Boranda":

    Restraint is a beautiful thing...

Why would someone who does not like salsa music want to dance to salsa music. Please help me understand.

    Restraint is a beautiful thing...

The piece about cultural heritage is less about the dancing/following itself, and more a rebuttal to your relegating our music to the background of the experience. Who knows. Maybe the DJs you're subjected to play the type of music that needs to be relegated to the background :D For the dance...

    Restraint is a beautiful thing...

I agree with your point about people having different motivations for why they're involved in salsa. But in salsa land, there is no dance without the music. Period. I reject completely and wholeheartedly "the music is just a background" and "If this includes ignoring the music - to hell with the...

    Restraint is a beautiful thing...

Last night, I went to Toda la noche. Of all the 'mainstream' socials, it generally has the best music, and plenty of good dancers show up, especially later in the night. One of those nice old-school conjunto-type songs comes on. Guitar, cuatro, nasal male backup singers with that country vibe...

    The best slow salsa songs

Not sure how slow you mean, but slow to mid-tempo salsa is my absolute favorite. I'm just trying to have a good time, after all :) Some of these won't be to everyone's taste. I don't have a problem with romantica if the soneos are rhythmically and melodically interesting, if there are juicy...

2016 New York Salsa Congress Roll Call

Post-Friday and Saturday night review: General thoughts: LOGISTICS: much better handling of this than in years past, in my experience. It seems that the organizers limited the amount of performances (just by looking at the list) which is AWESOME. The bands/DJ sets start at a decent time - also...
