So today is the last day to get passes for El Sol Warsaw before the price goes up again:

    http://salsafestival.pl/en/price/

I usually get party passes for congresses but as the difference between a full pass and a party pass is so small in this case, only about $20, I'll probably get a full pass. Only thing is, there are three different full passes--salsa, Cuban, and sensual--and I'm having trouble deciding; I'm kind of leaning towards the Cuban and kizomba workshops rather than salsa ones :p As I generally get very little learning from congress salsa workshops.

Anyone else thinking of going? I know a bunch of SFers went last year and had great reviews. Would love to plan hotel room sharing :)

By the way, I see there are lot of accommodation options, from hotels to really cheap AirBnb (some requiring a short taxi ride), any recommendations from those who have been to this festival?

As I am moving back to Europe in August, I'm so excited to look at the fall/winter European congress calendar :)

Last year, the congress hotel sold out, but they had arrangements with other nearby hotels. I stayed at the very nice SoundGarden for abour $45 a night, which included a full breakfast. It was about a 15 minute walk (in the COLD), but buses ran all night every half hour. Warsaw buses seem to be extremely punctual, too.

Update on housing (like I said, I'm excited and am currently in a forced salsa break period, so doing lots of research on upcoming festivals :D ): after perusing the hotel options on the official festival site and other sites, here's what I'm thinking.

    • The festival rooms (at Sangate Hotel--the former Gromada) cost 285 euro for 3 nights, for a 2-twin beds room (the cheapest option), so 140 euro per person total (I'm personally not open to sharing a twin bed :p ). Breakfast included.

    • There is also the Hampton Hilton, 2 minutes' walk from the festival hotel, at 311 euro for 3 people (queen bed plus a sofa bed) for 3 nights, breakfast included, so 104 euro per person total.

If I wanted to not have to use taxis or public transportation, I'd go for the Hampton. Which also has great reviews by the way. (The other hotels that are within walking distance as far as I can tell are of comparable prices to the Sangate/Gromada, so doesn't make sense to pay the same and not stay at the Sangate.)

    • Once we venture a little beyond walking distance, at 5 minutes by taxi or 10 minutes by bus there is a very nice Airbnb apartment that can fit 3 people (one king size bed and a sofa) and would cost 174 euro for 3 people, for the 3 nights, so 58 euro per person in total for all three nights, pretty sweet :)

Given that there is such easy bus transportation (and since we'd be dancing till the morning we'd definitely have buses available), and taxis would cost only a few euros, I'm leaning towards the AirBnb option, since it is half the price of the Hampton Hilston. I am thinking of booking it now as it has a free cancellation option until a few days before. I will probably book it for 4 nights

So, I know it's early, but as you guys think about your plans, let me know if you want to share the apartment with me. :)

    Update: AirBnb apartment booked!

Here is the link with photos, check it out as you start planning your trip and let me know if you want to share. Would be great to have SF roommates :)

The address is Sabaly 44-46 (you can see it on the map if you click on location in the AirBnb link below), 5 min by taxi, 10 min by bus from the festival hotel.

And just bought my pass :) After doing a bit of YouTube research on the Cuban instructors, decided for the Cuban pass :) (the linear salsa instructors are mostly ones I've taken workshops before and/or are not that inspiring as teachers :p )

Another update: the first AirBnb place I tried to booked said they were not available for those dates, so I booked a different apartment with instant confirmation that is even closer: 3 minutes by taxi from the festival hotel, 12 minutes by bus, 17 minutes' walking distance. Price is excellent: total is $321 for 4 nights (Thursday-Monday), so assuming 3 people, it comes to $80 total per person, or $20 per person per night. That's dollars, not euros, in euros it is even less. If we end up being four people, price goes down further of course. There are beds for 3 people -- two single beds and a sofa-bed -- but if two people want to share the sofa-bed, or someone brings a sleeping bag, we are allowed to have up to 4 people, per my reservation. Let's make it a SF party :)

So far it's me and @Dissonant Harmony :) So still room for 1-2 people.

Here's the apartment link--looks really nice and great reviews: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/13599459

There is a chance El Che would be willing to join. :)

Great! It would be very interesting to meet him in person, I remember the discussions in which when he was active on SF :)

So we only have space for one more person, first-come-first-served!

And I'm sure once he hears I've been to Cuba seven times he'll be excited to engage in all kinds of Cuba discussions, which I recall is one of his favorite topics :D

I don't even Cuban, but I recall my now-gf was less than impressed with the Cuban room when we were at El Sol in 2015 - mileage may vary obviously.

No problem. I'll tone him down!

It's alright! You'll be chatting; I'll be hiding behind my horrible accent and pretend to be tuning my alto recorder.
(note: You don't tune a plastic recorder).

Yeah, honestly all dance styles but on2 were kind of meh at El Sol. Just like at Bachaturo for Bachata.

I've been in 2015 and 2016... For me the Cuban Room was better in 2015, In 2016 everyone was just doing Afro/Rumba/orisha instead of Casino
I think its because the mambo room at el SOL is just so much better then the slippery stone tile floor in the cuban room. The good dancers tend to stay in the mambo room

According to Che, the hotel has gone through renovation, and now has a new name, as well as new owners.

Maykel Blanco is also announced this year for a live show. I hope they won't put it on Thursday night like Elito Reve last year.
I confirm the Cuban room was very slippery.

I'm super excited as Maykel Blanco is one of my favorite Cuban bands :) (The others are Los Van Van and Pupy) They have some very danceable songs.

I recall last year the concert was Thursday so I made sure to book the apartment for Thursday-Monday :)
