I received a note that this year's World Salsa Championship in Orlando in December has been postponed. Is this an omen of more shoes to drop due to the recession or something else ? Is the era of major salsa related events winding down due to economic difficulties ?

That is what they have posted on their site. This must just happened. Albert Torres was here conducting a regional qualifier a little while ago.

Yeah heard about this recently - I personally think they should go ahead with it as it encourages people to go from overseas and spend over there - thus stimulating the economy. The danger with recessions is the self-propagating decline fuelled by fear.
It's a pity - I was muchly looking forward to this year's WSC as I have attended the ACT, NSW and Australian Salsa Classics. |

Like they have the only location in the world ??... I,m sure one could find a suitable location even if delaying the date . Had a similar thing happen to me yrs back, running a comp.... held it at a later date .

Albert Torres announced the 2008 World Salsa Championships being postponed, by Disney at the 6th Canada Salsa Congress held on Columbus Day week-end in Toronto. No new date was announced. Torres indicated that as soon as they had a new date, it would be posted. No reason for the postponement was given. NO other information was given.
You will have to follow the world salsa championship website for a new date. Torres is still proceeding with the rest of the 2008 qualifiers at the other congresses. Perhaps is it the economy. The Canadian Congress had fewer Americans this year than in years past - passport and border, price of gas and the Canadian dollar all apparently conspired to keep them home. Salsa Seven and Torres Productions apparently have a contract with Disney for the venue. They may not be able to just pick up and hold it elsewhere.... and I rather doubt an outsider would be able to see what the terms of their argreement are... Keep you fingers crossed and hopefully we will have a 2008 World Salsa Championship, even if it is in 2009.

This may not be the primary reason. A lot of New York salseros went to the Punta Cana Congress that same weekend. In addition, I think the Canada Congress should try to get more international instructors from outside the USA.

Agreed, the lack of international performers and instructors was evident this year. Lots of mishaps though: Swing Latino, Adrian Y Anita, Al and Karla, Kelvin and Licellott had problems making it down.
