Philadelphia's Rock Lobster no longer running salsa nights

I just called and confirmed what I had read online, that Rock Lobster will no longer be having its weekly salsa nights on Sundays. They were almost always extremely well-attended. (The only exceptions I can think of relate to bad weather, and it's an outdoor club, so that's a particularly important factor.) I wonder if they weren't making enough money or drinks? Or perhaps there was a conflict between the club owner and the promoter/DJ/teacher, whatever. But in that case, the club could always bring in a new DJ or teacher, etc.

Does anyone actually know why it was canceled?

That really is too bad because it was a really nice venue for Sundays. It was right on the water, which was great cause you had a breeze to offset the summer heat. Perhaps they want something that will bring in more $$ at the bar?

I liked Rock Lobster because it was a soft core salsa spot and a nice place to hangout and socialize. If you are a guy and you got some skillz, you were definately a "chick magnet" at this place.

I guess everyone will continue to go to Alfies on Sundays. The loss of Rock Lobster can't be overstated though because it was a place where people actually socialized and not just put their salsa skillz on display.

I found out the salsa has been moved to Wednesdays.

This is good information to have when I finally get to visit home! Also my boyfriend wants to take lessons so I can gently nudge him this way. ;) (Do you know if they teach on1 or on2?)

The lessons are On1. I don't know of any group On2 classes that are offered in Philly so you would need to take privates with someone like Darlin Garcia to get that. :D

Yeah...I figured as much. I actually wanted him to take lessons with Darlin if he could. Actually what I told him was..."you don't HAVE to take lessons-salsa is my thing. But if you do-it would be NICE if you learned NY on2. " (Not that I'm being picky or anything.) ;)
