I knew there were different types of latin music, but I never knew there were so many types of Salsa. I've been lurking a bit, and I feel a little overwhelmed. I'd like to discuss the music more but seeing as how I don't know diddly about it :oops: I guess I don't have much to talk about.

Do you think some of you could post some songs/audio clips so that I could listen and compare the different sounds.

I've read that there's a difference in NY, LA, Puerto Rican, yadda, yadda, yadda.

I feel myself becoming entrenched in the Salsa world and I'm just getting started. How exciting... :banana:

Cool MM. :D The following CDs in no way represent "all" of Salsa but just to give you an idea:

A good all-around CD to purchase is Salsa Fresca by various artists such as Willie Colon, Pupy Santiago & Frankie Ruiz.

For Cuban Salsa, a good CD to start with is Cachao's Master Sessions, Vol. 2

If you've seen Dance With Me (Vanessa Williams & Chayanne), you'll remember alot of this music. Unfortunately, it was not on the original soundtrack. :roll:

For Boogalu or Columbian Salsa, a good CD might be Sonora Carruseles' Heavy Salsa CD

For New York style, Mambo or Puerto Rican Salsa, try the 20 Anniversary of the NY Salsa Festival: 1975-1995 compilation CD. It includes Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Ruben Blades, Hector Lavoe, Cheo Feliciano, Marc Anthony, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico.

Cuban: Try the new timba stuff (which I hate) - Los Van Van for instance... :(

Can't argue with that one Peach! Man, I remember just getting started and listening to that CD for the umpteenth time, still trying to get the "feel" of it all... :oops:
 
Yeah I know, there's just so much, if you haven't grown up with it it's hard to know where to start. Me, I've been going crazy on buying CDs recently. It isn't taking me long to find out what I like and what I'm not so fond of.

The discs that are getting heavy rotation on my CD player at the moment are Wild, Wild Salsa by Puerto Rican Power which I'm loving to bits (got to get more by them, got to!) and Salsa Heat! which is a 2-disc compilation subtitled "Classic salsa & latin grooves from the vaults of Fania Records" and it's pretty cool. There's lots of different sounds and styles on there. Besides, let's face it, who is there out there, whether they like salsa or not, who couldn't do with a copy of the song Bang Bang????

wow I feel the same way.... i been listening to Celia Cruz, Victor Manuelle, Olga Tanon, India, Oscar D'Leon and my Fav singer Marc Anthony.... but didnt know there were differenty types of Salsa music... I enjoy listening and dancing to salsa, merengue...well all types of music..
Recently a friend of mine gave me a CD 'Buena Vista Social Club' really great album.

Thank you guys. I cannot wait for my cds to come in the mail. I only ordered them like 3 days ago, and I'm already stalking the mailman. LOL. I have ALOT of hispanic friends from all over, but I'm always self conscious about asking them about music. The first time I had a salsa cd playing someone (not one of my friends) asked if I understood spanish, and I said no, and he said then why are you listening to spanish music. :evil: At which point I replied, the last time I checked music wasn't only about the words. But ever since I've been a bit shy about it. :oops: I have one friend who I ask but I feel like I'm always swipin' his music. My favorite of his is El Gran Combo. It is virtually impossible to stand still while listening to that cd. Anyhoo, after reading one of the threads here I asked him if he had any Richie Ray, he was like... :shock: and said wow, that's old school, I don't have any Richie Ray, but I should get some. :P

My collection is building, About half of my cds are some mix of bachata ( which I LOVE :banana: ) merengue (gets old quick) and Salsa ( I can't get enough of :D )
