Malaysia Now Has A Salsa Festival!

Hi Everyone!

I’ve just come back from an AMAZING time at the 1st Malaysian International Salsa Festival held at Cherating, Malaysia from 4-7 August. There were something like 460-470 salsa addicts staying in 2 resorts. We had Lady Salsa herself, Susana Monteiro, Santo Rico, Jaime Jesus & Little Liz, Dave Paris & Zoe and Ashwin among the instructors and performers among others from Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

Proper workshops were held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons – 4 slots of 45 mins each with 3 workshops to choose from. After we arrived on Friday, we had more informal lambada and bachata workshops by the poolside during our high tea buffet. Saturday morning saw the Afro-Carribean Movement workshop being conducted on the beach.

And of course, performances every night from Friday – Sunday, and then DANCE DANCE DANCE until the wee hours of the morning!

Weather was gorgeous, so we could take full advantage of the beach / sea / poolside / sun when we wanted to. We had people by and in the swimming pool at 2-5am cooling off, including the guys from Santo Rico and Lady Salsa Susana!

Linline Productions will be organising another one next year, and when details are finalised, they’ll be put up here. I couldn’t wait to post this, I’m SO wired from such a great experience, I had to share it here! :D This was my first salsa festival and I had a blast. From what friends tell me, I know the other Salsa Festivals / Congresses that they’ve attended feature more workshops from morning until night and a lot more to choose from. So this one was different because we had the mornings free... some did private classes, sunbathed, flew kites on the beach, played beach volleyball etc, or just started dancing outside in the balmy air to the great music was playing.

One thing though... those of you joining us next year, bring lots of tops to change into – we are in a tropical country so it’s hard to keep things cool when you have hundreds of very enthusiastic dancers in one spot, so we did sweat a lot. I know one salsero changed his shirt 8 times whilst dancing between 10pm-3am!

Oh PS – The attending salseros/salseras came from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, India, Indonesia, Ireland, America, United Kingdom, Korea, Japan, China, Hong Kong... (not sure if I’ve left any other countries out)
