Why do you do latin dancing!!?

..because there's way better means to get exercise than that.

To gain weight.. From fun/exercise factor only basketball would be more exciting than dancing. I'm trying to do both. Also when I dance I have smaller need to play music. Compensation.

Salsa combines body, mind, music, connection with people and vibrant society. It's hard to beat that.

For me it's not about latin american culture and nothing to do with politics. I'd prefer there be less politics in salsa and less chauvinism. More sweat and more diverse music. :)

I am addicted to the music, the technique, the physical fatigue from the training and most importantly I get to do what I love with the person I love.

In 1994 Ruben Blades ran for president in his country of Panamá. He is a lawyer and very involved in politics.

Wow, I didn't know that. I've been researching salsa history the last few days and learned that Blades was an attorney who served in government (Dept. of Tourism, I think), but I didn't know he ran for president. I also read that Blades and his former partner had some sort of legal spat.

How could there be less politics? I thought I was the only person in the universe who even cares. ;)

In researching salsa history, I was very interested to learn just how political salsa's roots are, and the album Sembia - the best-selling salsa album ever, I believe - was a political blockbuster...in South America. But I suspect most contemporary salseros in the U.S. and Europe don't even have a clue about the political aspects.

In the meantime, I also did a little research on timba and felt like I was researching salsa all over again. Timba, which was developed in Cuba, is rife with social and political issues.

1) I love the music
2) It is my favorite way to relieve stress. When I am having a good night dancing all my other thoughts are pushed away and I feel recharged.
3) I like the social scene. I find it curious that later in life I am out clubbing 10x more that I ever did when I was younger.

I wish I could jump into a time machine and visit New York City in the 1960's/70's. That was such an exciting period in history to begin with - though I experienced it in West Dakota, far from the action - and I suspect the Latin dance scene must have been even more exciting then.

Think how bad I must feel. I grew up 50 miles from NYC in the 60's/70's and never heard of salsa.

OK, if you insist, I'll tell you my New York/Puerto Rican story. ;)

I'm from South Dakota and was stationed in Newfoundland while in the Navy. One year I went on vacation with a friend who was also from South Dakota. Another buddy was Newyorican - a New Yorker of Puerto Rican ancestry, for anyone reading this who didn't know. He was getting married in his home town, NYC, and we were invited to the wedding.

So we drove back to Newfoundland, stopping off in NYC for the wedding. Unfortunately, we somehow lost the address...but we remembered the approximate address.

We parked along a curb in a Puerto Rican neighborhood, and I got out and started asking people if they knew Frank Martinez. Everybody thought that
was funny; there were probably more people on that one block than in my home town - including any number of Frank Matinez's.

We finally gave up and fled the city.

Too bad we missed the wedding; that was in the mid-1970s, when salsa was in its prime.

Its just a great social activity. I dont think it gives me much fitness benefits but thats maybe because I jog and go to the gym often as well.

I started Salsa dancing this summer, during a Salsa course at the University of Washington. I learned so much about the dance itself, along with the Latin American culture. Now, though the class is almost over, I plan to continue dancing at local salsa clubs in Seattle. The music, the dance, the people are all so energetic and passionate, and that's what keeps me so interested in Salsa dancing.

Welcome to the forums, Salsakatie! I'm just down the road (I5) in Portland, and SalsaBear is in your neighborhood.

Cheap thrills. Superficial social life. Exercise of sorts.

Getting into Salsa dancing was a positive and important experience for me, but I don’t feel so dependent on it anymore.

I'd recommend the Monday night practica or the Friday night all-ages dance, both at the Century Ballroom on Capitol Hill.

It is a fun hobby, a great way to keep fit, meet new friends and it is something I can do even during the long, very cold Montana winters without developing frostbite! ;)

I actually did not intend to learn salsa. I picked it up in New Mexico as I wanted to try something new while on vacation and it has turned into a hobby that can potentially change my entire lifestyle. I know it has already changed my spending style as I am already spending money on salsa lessons, buying clothes for it, paying admission to salsa clubs and spending money on drinks at the clubs LOL

Wow, salsa in Montana? (I LOVE western Montana. Salsa would make it even closer to paradise. :))
