Hey, I was wondering if I could get people's comments on Shaka Brown's video series. I've been dancing for four years and would like to pick up some new moves. I am also very interested in his shines video - has anyone seen it, if you follow the exercises does it really help you look smooth? And does anyone have comments on Nelson Flores' shines video?

I was debating on getting his over Bernard Martinez series as I am trying to learn on the 2. Having danced on 1 for five years it's been a frustrating process.... Because a friend had one of Bernard's intermediate I decided to get Shakas. I haven't had time to go over the Shines but in previewing it looks like good stuff. With each shine he has guest performers join him. I'll post more when I get a chance to try them out....

I have Shaka's shines video and his advanced patterns. I really like them both.

His shines videos really incorporate the whole body - not just the feet. He has isolation exercises that are great.

And his advanced patterns are all good. He breaks down his moves really well - and he does show a lot of moves. Some I haven't seen anywhere else.

I have vids by both of these guys. They are both decent, however, I have DVDs that are better than both of them as well. One of the reasons I say other DVDs are better is because those are the ones I chose to watch over and over and always get something new out of them and they also cover basically the same material as the two people in question.

Out of the two, can't say one is better than the other. Personally, I like Nelson's style and his teaching method more, but Shaka's DVDs have good stuff to offer as well, especially in the absence of other comparable sources. I think Shaka has done a better job of marketing his DVDs through various outlets so you tend to hear about them more.

Personally, with the advent of so many free videos on the internet I prefer to use these for self-instruction because the moves are done in real time and often with more improv. Also, with the vids on the Net you get to see so many different styles for doing the same moves and many patterns. Lastly, the stuff on the Net is often closer to what people actually do on the dance floor and tends to have the most recent bells and whistles. Good luck :D

Vol. 1 to 3 are ON 2 and Vol. 4 is ON 1 and ON 2, don't know why he doesn't do both on the first 3 dvds.
