More info on Sonora Matancera album En Grande?

hyh

Changui
I've bought a CD supposedly by Sonora Matancera titled En Grande (Tumi Records, 1991). Does anyone have any background info on this album? Is it really all by Sonora Matancera? Is it a compilation?

I am a little confused because I think at least one of the songs is from a Javier Vazquez album called Javier - the song is Tu No Me Has Visto Miguel. I don't know if this is a different newer recording? I do realize that Javier Vasquez took over the piano spot of Sonora Matancera in 1976 and the leadership of Sonora Matancera in 2001.

The rest of the songs also sound like they were recorded in mid-70s or possibly late 70s or early 80s rather than the ubiquitous "golden age" stuff from 40s to 60s. Chocolate Armenteros and Javier Vasquez are playing for sure but there's no liner note in this CD.

Songs in the CD include the following. I really like them by the way.

Sonora Matancera - En Grande
1. El Baile Del Sillon
2. Son De Matanza
3. En La Casa De Mi Compay
4. Ritmo Tambo Y Flores
5. Tu No Me Has Visto Miguel
6. Besito De Coco
7. Merengue Del Pichoncito
8. Sabrosito Asi

Yes, it's a different recording, the one on the 'Javier' album is faster and much stronger IMO. There is also another version on the Javier Vazquez y Su Sonido album Exitos de 'La Sonora' which is very good.

Ah. That explains it. That would make this Sonora Matancera (later) version to be something that was probably released between 1977 and 1980 (or the time period when Chocolate was playing together with Javier Vazquez with Sonora Matancera). I get the feeling that En Grande is a compilation album still.

As you may know, getting hold of those Javier Vazquez album on internet is next to impossible right now (aside from "Salsa Y Montuno" compilation). I'm guessing that both "Javier" and "La Verdad" is owned by Fania/E-Musica.

One more question or more specifically a clarification. Are you saying that there is a third version of "Tu No Me Has Visto Miguel" in this album "Exitos De La Sonora"?

A quick google search reveals that "Javier Vasquez y Su Sonido 82 Interpreta Exitos De La Sonora" was (probably) never released on CD. I can't find any song list of the album. So what did you do? Buy an LP?

Yes :)

Yes :) Javier Vazquez was the reason I started buying vinyl, I desperately wanted 'La Verdad' and couldn't find it on cd so the only way I could get it was on vinyl, it's a slippery slope - you buy one then you're hooked (and skint!!!)

If you're interested in joining me on the slippery slope, both 'La Verdad' and 'Javier' are available on ebay at this very moment at bargain prices (though the bidding may get aggressive at the end of the auctions) you might get lucky though ;)

Actually, I've just listened to all three versions of 'Tu No Me Has Visto Migue' and now I'm pretty sure the version on the 'La Sonora Mantancera - En Grande' is the same version as the one on Javier's 'Exitos de La Sonora 82' album but slowed down (without maintaining the pitch) :? :? :?. Can anyone confirm? Why would they do that? It sounds all wrong

Yup, I'm sure it's the same version slowed down. I've uploaded a short clip from each track (in order of my preference):

1. From 'Javier'
2. From 'Exitos de La Sonora 82'
3. From 'La Sonora Mantancera - En Grande'

I already have bought too many CDs. It's going to cause me a headache when it's time for me to move back to the States. Well... maybe I'll find a convenient reason to make multiple trips. I don't think I want to worry about LPs on top of it. I'll just continue to complain about Fania/E-Musica remastering program on these boards.

Regarding the versions in En Grande and Exitos de La Sonora 82 being the same more or less, I guess it makes the En Grande compilation even more dubious, no? Although it's possible that the version in Exitos... is speeded up and the En Grande version is closer to the original recording.

One more thing. I placed this query on the Name That Tune section because I figured people like DJ Nik and ViejotecaChango and many other DJ types were more likely to spend time there.

Another one. Is Exitos... dated 1982? Does it have musicians listed? Is Chocolate Armenteros in it? To my ears the trumpet playing in En Grande has same sound quality throughout. And who's doing the lead vocals?

Oh, sorry to intrude, I'll get my coat.

Huh? No offense meant. I'm actually quite thankful of your info, clips, etc. I'm guessing the other people probably would not be able to do any better unless someone has an even more extensive collection of Sonora Matancera and Javier Vazquez; I would be interested in more info if out there. Sorry for not explicitly thanking you at an earlier juncture.

My bad, misunderstood that part of your post (thought you were disappointed that only I answered ).

My albums are stored at my other address but when I get chance I look at the credits for further info (I uploaded a photo of the front cover to my pooter but not the back). It may be after I get back from holiday in a couple of weeks but hopefully someone can give you more info soon anyway :).

No. I was simply disappointed that someone moved the thread - I put it in NAME THAT TUNE because I felt I was most likely to get the most amount of feedback there rather than SALSA MUSIC. All the DJ types to check out NAME THAT TUNE section regularly but not all respond to posts in SALSA MUSIC regularly. Thus moving the thread probably did not help me at all in my opinion - but of course you are not responsible for moving the thread.

Thank you again. Your answers were really informative and surprising.

For whatever it's worth, I would not have minded someone moving the thread AFTER a few days AFTER most of my intended pool of experts had a go at answering my query. After all I did consider putting the query here originally before deciding on what I thought was a "better" option.

I've just downloaded the whole 'En Grande' album from emusic 'cos I'm intrigued (I only bought the two Javier Vazquez tracks from iTunes before, preferred the versions I already had so didn't bother with the rest).

Just listened to 'Besito De Coco' which is listed as 'Ismael Rivera' both on iTunes and on emusic but clearly it's not , it is in fact the Javier Vazquez version from (yet again) the Exitos de La Sonora 82 album, you guessed it - slowed down again :?

The plot thickens, 'El baile del sillon' (listed as ' Jose Corbos' on the En Grande album) is once again the same version as on Javier Vazquez's Exitos de La Sonora 82 album. Slower again.

Confirmed - anyone who has been after Javier Vazquez's 'Exitos de La Sonora 82' album, here it is  just alter the pitch ;)
