Yes I was there. I mean... wow! Five days of dancing, watching shows, dancing some more, taking workshops and dancing even more.
Lots of great dancers and instructors: Eddie Torres and Santo Rico (NY), Felipe Polanco (PR), Joby Brava (LA), Salsa Lovers (Miami), City Dance Corps (Toronto), Nuno and Vanda (Portugal), Massacote (Boston) and the teams from the great schools in Montreal : San Tropez, Chilital and Carol Pare. The big surprise were the salsa troupes from Calgary and the great improvement of the canadian amateur troupes. In other cities, they would be professional level.
The best routines were by CDC from Toronto with a beautifully choreographed and perfectly executed Tango-Salsa using umbrellas as props; and the San Tropez version of the re-make of Aguanile, which was almost a religious experience.
The Extreme Salsa Competition was a nail-baiter that was not resolved until the last performance and for the first time ever, all three top spots went to Montreal couples.
Great event. I got to dance with Albert Torres, who actually remembered me from the West Coast Salsa Congress in 2005.
Only negative points: they did not realize how many out-of-towners there would be and the venue capacity for the goodbye party was insufficient; as well as the usual idiots who dance int he middle of the dancefloor as if they were on stage and make life dangerous for everyone around them. And of course, they go to the suggestion box at the end of the convention and berate the organizers for choosing a club instead of the Kazakhstan steppes as a venue. I mean, the Metropolis (the main venue) holds 2000 people for disco, so I am sure 1100 salseros could fit in no? Unless the show-off morons try to do lifts in the middle of the crowd. Do not get me started.
