Still doing my self-imposed research on the music of Salsa. Oh my, Hector Lavoe's Aléjate woke me up today, literally! There is so much drama in this song. I flipped once again. :bouncy: The voice, the strings, the piano, the bass line, the drum line, the horns, the repeated "No te quiero mas...." oh my Goodness!
Take a listen here: mamboston2.com/djnik.htm in Volume 2 :)

The slow build up of the altrenate brass and singing section in "Lloraras" that never quite peaks but is always leaving you wanting it. *tongue hangin out*

Okay, this CD woke me up today: Cachaito by Cachaito Lopez
I have to buy this TODAY!
From Amazon.com
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Buena Vista Social Club bassist Orlando Cachaito Lopez busts out of the senior activity center with an out-there release worthy of a youngster that draws on five decades of professional cool. Instead of trying to compress the history of Cuban dance music, Cachaito elongates it into a shape-shifting amoeba that can swallow and absorb almost any influence. On "Redencion," reggae-inflected electric organ jabs throw open the door to dub effects. Massed charanga violins stutter and echo as the bottom drops in and out of the mix. The project gets a jolt from figures not usually associated with Cuban music, like Jamaican organist Bigga Morrison, French DJ Dee Nasty, South African flugelhornist Hugh Masekela, and saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis of James Brown Revue fame. But it's the Cubans who provide the disc's most unexpected performances. The pizzicato strings on "Oracion Lucumi" fall like snow in a glass globe shaken hard by a gritty tres solo. Groove-heavy "A Gozar el Tombao" spills in on Manuel Galban's reverb-laden surf guitar. Ibrahim Ferrer comes out of nowhere with a short ascending cameo vocal on "Wahira," the sole noninstrumental track onboard. Cachaito is the only artist to have played on every track of every Buena Vista Social Club release. In lightning-rod fashion, he's accumulated so much energy from those sessions, it flashes all over this gorgeous, mixed-up masterpiece. --Bob Tarte
Songs like Redencion & Mis Dos Pequenas really spoke and lifted my spirt from the floor. I'm in love with this CD already!!!

I have that Barretto CD also. I agree, its awesome.
I noticed you mentioned some stuff about Hector Lavoe.
I would recommend a 2-cd compilation album called "Hector".
I really dont know where to get it. My friend got it for me when I was in NYC. I think you would really love it.

I agree.
Descarga.com is THE site to go for all (or most) types of Afro-Carribean Music.
Its also the site that will have the music. If they dont have it, then it either doesnt exist or its an Extremely Rare LP/CD.

WEPA!!! Went music shopping again! Surprised?
For GREAT stocking stuffers this Christmas, consider these compilation CDs. Awesome music here:
Ay Que Ryko Latino!
Rykodisc label's roster of Latin-music acts who mix modern salsa with firm groundings in tradition. Artists present include Cubanismo, Plena Libre, Jose Alberto, Jimmy Bosch, and Truco; it's a great introduction to an exciting assortment of musicians. The Artwork threw me off on the CD. I was thinking it was again another rip-off CD with unknown artists but to my surprise, it's a nice CD. Love it. Get's you dancing right away.

2 El Paso de Encarnacion by Cubanismo

7 En Las Delicias by Cubanismo
8 Carnaval by Plena Libre
9 Enamorado de mi Pais by Jose el canario Alberto
10 Somos la Fuerza Latina by Various Artists from Roberto Clemente Un Tributo CD
The other one is Cuba, The Greatest Songs Ever. If you like Cuban Salsa, you love this. Mambo Yo Yo is my favorite. Ironically, the artwork on this one is what attracted me to it.

That's actually one of my favorite songs from Hector Lavoe too.
one quick note though...
The chorus is saying "no te quiero mas" ;) ... he wants her out of his life as much as possible... really a beautiful song though
