I just saw this at hymstyle.com
Important News and Announcements
•GOING NATIONAL-you may have already caught a glimpse of Burju and Victor on a commercial for Fox's new show "So you think you can dance". Although they made it pretty far in the NYC finals, unfortunately they were not selected to be on the show. But tune in to Fox on July 20th at 8pm to see the premier of the show. You may get to see some clips of Burju and Victor in the audition process.
Bummer! :( That would have been pretty cool watching another familiar Salsa couple break it down on television. I wish one day, TV executives will broadcast a show at primetime with JUST the various styles of Salsa. What do you think? Not a good idea? Rather keep it our little secret? :)

Forget about the Salsa Dance Show...
They Spanish Execs in the T.V. World need to bring back a new Iris Chacon!
I miss her pretty smile!

So what does anyone else think of Alex DaSilva on this show so far?

What's the premise of this show ?
We've had a couple of dance shows here in the UK and I believe the States have picked up some of the ideas.

So what does anyone else think of Alex DaSilva on this show so far? There was this one couple. Huge guy compared to his partner. Maybe three times her size. Height and weight. Anyways, there was this step through the hoop thing, don't know what to call it but it wsas very Alex DaSilva. :) Anyways, the poor guy had the hardest time trying to get it. I mean really struggling moreso because of this size. And the poor lady's arms just weren't long enough. I've only seen Alex on the one show so I can't really give a completely educated opinion. Last week I thought the sequence he taught was a little difficult and over the top for them but then again it's supposed to be hence the name of the show. ;) The one thing that does make me nervous is that, quite often, the TV world is seeing only one style of Salsa. Not that LA is bad but I just wished they would show a little of everything.

Ah - the one Alex DaSilva class I've done involves this very move !
As I'm 6ft and my partner was 5ft (almost) we couldn't do it in a timely manner. We gave up the class - afterwards we decided that we should have improvised something else and kept with the rest of the lesson.

Yeah, I've been watching the show. Alex is not bad, but I'm worried that folks who don't know Salsa will think that's all there is to it.
I teach classes and I cringe when "Salsa" is shown on TV and it's all lifts and tricks. Then, I get people taking my class who want me to teach them lifts and tricks cause they think that's Salsa.
But, I teach Casino/Cuban style. At the same time, any exposure to dance to get the general public interested is a good thing.

Very true, Simona. Right, at least there is some exposure. Better than none at all. :)

Okay, up next is Mambo...Michelle and Jonnis
I thought they did fine. :) The judges had some good pointers though. The routine was very Da Silva in style. :)

Still a couple of hours until its on here in California...
There are, howver, now interviews with both the choreographers and the finalists posted in the Media section of Fox's site. The interview snippets are short, but they give some insight as to what the various judges are looking for  http://www.fox.com/dance/media/index.aspx

SD, I like that they have some snippets of the judges interview. Good to have an idea where they're coming from. :)
:headwall: I missed the second couple doing Mambo! Anyone else see it? :(

Their performance rocked! :rocker:
The only thing that's sort of bugging me is that the LA Style emphasis on tricks is actually taking a lot of the dancing out of the dance for the couples doing mambo! :( (At least as of this first week of actual studio performances.)

Why doesn't he pick moves that are not limited by bodytype? He is a small guy and his partner is about 4ft11 so they can do everything, but he picks moves for the group that are small people moves. Moves like the snake and the one where you go through your partners arms? LA all the way .. no problem ... but I'm sure there are cool moves that everyone can reasonable try.

My pet theory is that most of the best dancers are below average height. As a result they can spin faster, move their body faster and wave their arms around with impunity :D
I struggle to bend over quickly and, as my arms measure 2m (6'6''), I don't wave them around much !
At a lesson this week, the teacher had us sticking our heads through a gap made by the lady's arms (sideways on). I've been hit about the head so many times :( that I just ignored that bit :D
