4 those on the fence about Atlanta

:D On top of that, the scene was split last night, as Julian, the local Casino instructor, was having a pre-Congress party at another club, too.

Thanks for posting this! 8)

Does anyone know who the guy and girl (on the right) in the 4th picture are? I have never seen them around Atlanta before and they were some of the best on1 dancers I have seen ever. :D Incredibly quick and sharp, but not overly flashy and dramatic like a lot of LA dancers are. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just not my personal style)

Hi Daniel,

Those two are Oscar and Danielle (bettter known as on2 dancers, actually--but I think they both dance on1, as well) from Miami. Oscar is an impeccable lead and Danielle is great to watch. You can catch a few clips of them in action at various events on imambo. I swear I see them everywhere I travel! :)

Signed, the girl on the left. :)

I already knew who you were Maya. ;-) Thanks for letting me know. I saw Oscar dancing with Magna on2 as well but he looked better on1, I'm guessing because Danielle must be his dance partner. They were so awesome to watch!

Re: 4 those on the fense about Atlanta

No Gordon Neill in the pics? I thought he was one of the main faces of Atlanta Salsa, if not the main one...? Of course, you Atlanta folks can correct me on that... lol

I'm not really sure as far as the face of Atlanta on the outside, but on the inside, I rarely see him at local events. He is also one of the main organizers of the flava invasion, which is the other Atlanta Congress, so I imagine that is part of the reason why he was not at the event last night, but thats just my guess....

It's true that Gordon is the sole face of Atlanta in the international salsa scene. We may see him out sometime during the weekend (last night was just the pre-party). However, our local scene is pretty fragmented, so our events do not always fully represent all of our local talent.

 LOL--just making sure! As for Oscar, the first time he came to Atlanta (he was actually at the Swim where my birthday was celebrated, back in January), he told me he was just learning/transitioning to on2. He was good on2 then, and great on1, but each time I've seen him since, his dancing on2 just keeps getting better. In fact, I haven't danced with him on1 since that first day. By the way, be sure to ask Dani to dance sometime this weekend--she's super-friendly.

We've heard of Edie's "world's best leads." As much a Mya travels maybe she has a top 5?????????????????????????????????????

That's interesting...because when i saw them dancing on1, I mentioned to my friend that they really look like on2 dancers. I guess it's just their style. I'm trying to make the transition to on2, but it's hard in Atlanta where most people dance on1, especially since I still can't convince my practice partner to learn it. :(

LOL :P Wow, that'd be hard. And I barely have a fraction of Edie's experience, so not sure how good of a judge I'd be! So, salcero--are you one of the ones "on the fence" about Atlanta?

Geez, inquiring minds would still like to hear you favorite 5 leads

Mya, there are too many congresses this weekend ... Singapore, Punta Cana, Atlanta ... I'm gonna play it safe and go to Jimmy Anton's since its his birthday social and there will be a live band and planty of dancers.

BTW, any word if there will be a Flava Invasion this year? I would go to that ;)

It can be done--I speak from personal experience! See if you can persuade your partner to drop in on a local on2 instructor's class and give it a try (if you want recommendations, I'd be happy to oblige). If not, go on your own. It's actually gotten a lot easier for on2 dancers in Atlanta recently: there are far more available leads and follows who dance it, but sometimes you have to seek them out. Being able to dance both styles opens up a world of possibilities! 8)

Hmm...only 5?? Arrgh. LOL That is so tough, though--because I enjoy so many different leads for different reasons; i.e. musicality/musical interpretation, creativity of lead, clarity of lead, etc. I'll PM you some of my faves (wouldn't want to stain the thread too much!).

Jimmy Anton himself will actually be here at the ATL Congress, but I can't blame you for choosing to stick with his social. I was thinking of going up to NYC next weekend, and am now rethinking because it's not a Jimmy's Sunday! LOL

As for Flava, I guess we just have to stay tuned. It'd be cool to finally meet/dance with you, though (if we haven't already and you just didn't reveal your web idenity). ;)

Jimmy is teaching at the ATL Congress on Friday and Saturday, but he flies back intime for his birthday bash on Sunday at his social.

LATIN SUNDAYS PARTY WITH JIMMY ANTON - JIMMY'S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION - 5:00 - 10:00 PM - Live Band: Harry Anton & the New York All Stars - At Dance Manhattan Studios - The longest running & most attended mambo social in New York City for over 13 years - A destination for dancers from all over the world - Great music & sound system & great dance partners - A not to be missed event

Here is a vid of them dancing from the party that night in Atlanta. The vids are being posted in real time on Imambo

Who here is going to be at the congress party tomorrow night? I am still not 100% sure if I am going there or to the other event in town since the congress is a little pricey...

It's really too bad that promotors have split the dance scene during the congress. It doesn't give a good perspective to visitors from out of town!

Nice to meet you Mayan!! :)
