Dj Duste - Que Viva La Salsa Dura

Cantante: Dj Duste
Album: Que Viva La Salsa Dura
Data: 06/09/2007

A gem for collectors and for those that love Salsa Dura classics. You may not like the originals but you’ll get a treat with DJ Duste’s (Dustin Anthony) remixes of these classic gems. Here you have the best of both worlds on this double CD set: The original and rare Salsa Dura tunes as they were recorded in the 60’s and 70’s. For those who get tired and exhausted from listening to the original songs, pop in disc #2 in your player as DJ Duste from Olso Norway gives salsa dura fans a nice treat. Listen to Duste’s remixes of the classics putting a different sound with some sampling, adding beats, scratching and all of the DJ techniques to make you swing on the dance floor. 90% of the tracks on this special double CD set were never released or reissued on CD until now. - Info e preascolti dei brani originali ( poi remixati nel cd 2): http://www.hardsalsa.com/quevivalasalsadura.html - Distribuito in Italia da www.cdlatino.com e www.cdsalsa.it dal 11.09. sounds like a good CD... :)
good luck Dj Duste!

Hi!

Yap, this one is a must have. The original is great and the Duste did an excelent job with the rmx. The longer versions of some rmx make them more suitable to the dance flor. All the songs are great, but I love Menique - Maniqua. Usually, at the parties, I've been mixing the original and duste remix, creating a version with 3m20 more or less, and it works very well!

I bought from hard salsa website and received the CD in less than one week. I think prodland has it already.

I think this is a project that should have a second volume, at least...

CD 1 is soooooo great, congratulation to Dj Duste for selecting these gems.

Yet CD 2 ....

Any comments from Classic Salsa Lovers, about the remixed CD 2?

I like the subtle loops to extend the 2 minute songs for the dance floor. I do not think these disrupt the integrity of the songs. Duste has done an outstadning job. As for the other remixes I think they are very very well done but it is really a matter of taste whtehre you approve or not. I applaud Duste for trying something different and ambitious. Well done sir!

I don't want to play the role of the Taleban, cause I myself have in mind to cut and paste an unknown hit of a known band of the sixties and make it danceable to the 90% (and not 60% like it actually is).

But in that case I would act as a sort of "Ex Post Producer", not as a House Dj.

I am aware that we are living in the decade of the 2000, and that all music that came after 76/77 was mixed in the dancehalls, be it discomusic, house or reggae.

Yet here we are dealing with something Sacred which is called Classic Salsa; I think that many old school musicians wouldn't appreciate the job made in the second CD.

To me, the music at the first CD is realy great!

I start DJing a wile ago and still discover 'new' music so also almost all the songs are new to me

After listen to cd 1 I listen to cd 2 and...... GREAT JOB!
I like old Salsa and the remixes he made will sound like they are still old.
Well done !

Next month DJ Duste will play his music here and for sure I will be there to listen how he is doing.
Someone told me he did an realy good Job at the Hamburg Congress and after that he get invited all over the world... :!:

Let me just first state that I am NOT a CD buyer. AT ALL. All too often, I only like 1 or 2 songs on a CD of 15. Salsa or otherwise. So it's generally never worth the money for me.

I got hip to Duste when a DJ out here played his remix of Blue Mambo. I absolutely looooooved it. So I checked out Duste's site, listened to more of his samples, read his bio, totally got to feeling the guy. Then I saw he had a CD coming out and knew I had to support. First salsa CD I've ever bought actually. :)

I like SIX of his remix songs... 6!! For me, that's an awful lot! So yea, I'd say the CD set is a definite goodie. Especially love Blue Mambo, Salsa Malando, Manigua, and Canto a Chango.
:rocker:

I ordered this after listening to samples on CD Baby. It's not arrived yet but I've ordered it purely for CD 1, if I like any of the re-mixes on CD 2 it will be a bonus but I'll be happy with the originals even if I don't. :D

Greetings, My name is Andres Padua, the executive producer of QUE VIVA LA SALSA DURA-Original and Remixes CD. First, I would like to thank all of you for your support and purchasing the CD Que Viva La Salsa Dura – Originals and Remixes. It’s wonderful to read that the majority of you love this CD and are enjoying the rare classics tropical sound and the remixes by DJ Duste included on the second CD of the set.

First I would like to mention, I am an old school Salsa fan to the death. I am also an advocate of classic salsa. In other words, I feel classic Salsa should never be remixed and it should remain exactly how the artist intended the song to be when it was recorded originally…until I met DJ Duste last year.

When I heard DJ Duste’s remix of Orquesta Broadway – Trompeta Y Flauta last year, I said to myself, “Holy smokes, this DJ can remix classic Salsa Dura and maintain the classic sound of the song and most of all, it’s danceable.” Anyway to make a long story short, I aired DJ Duste’s remix of Orquesta Broadway and I received an incredible response from people all over the world requesting copies of the remix and to re-air the remix again since I don’t share MP3 especially music I don’t own and license. The Orquesta Broadway remix was rotated every 4 hours on Hard Salsa Radio playlist and within 2 months I received over 500 emails for copies of this remix.

It was at that point I said, “It’s time to produce a CD with DJ Duste remixes.” I was going to produce a CD with DJ Duste and only include his remixes however I began to think about hardcore Salsa Dura fans and advocates like myself that would badly criticize the CD. I can read it now, people stating “CLASSIC SALSA SHOULD NOT BE REMIXED. LEAVE THE CLASSICS ALONE!” I was having nightmares about these bad criticisms. So I told Duste, lets produce a CD that will have your remixes and the same songs in their original recordings. Everyone will then be happy. The fans will have your remixes and the originals, hence lets call the CD “QUE VIVA LA SALSA DURA – ORIGINALS AND REMIXES. He agreed.

It’s funny; we are getting more rave reviews on DJ Duste’s remix from Disc #2 than the originals on disc #1. This is proof, that although you may be an old school salsa dura fan and you strongly feel classic Salsa should not be remixed, chances are, you may love the remixes of the Salsa Dura classics. DJ Duste made me a believer along with hundreds of others. Congradulation DJ Duste for an outstanding job on your first CD.

Get ready folks, there may be a second volume coming soon of QUE VIVA LA SALSA DURA – ORIGINALS AND REMIXES.

i can't wait

Honestly,

The Latin Sould Show rocks!
I don't get to listen to it that often due to school but when I do... ah man, it's so crazy.
I love the fact that you guys have taken a stand of bringing back the oldies but in a very new way and with a fresh label.
Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good artists currently out there right now, but there is just so much in the "old school" songs.

By the way, one of my favorite songs from this album is
Don Juan - Mujer Bonita

THAT SONG IS SICK!!

I can only hope that I can be as great a DJ as Duste and the greats from the Latin Soul Show.

Ok, ok, I am an old-style minded Salsero!!!

I can't deny that the effects made by Dustin are simply great and energical... yet I want to tell you a story.

There was a Classic Salsa Dj down here in Italy, who came form Discomusic and later on entered the Salsa scene in the ninetiees through the main door: he was definitely The Best in Milan (now he changed his job).

Well, when it was the time to build his own website, he choosed How Sweet Is (Que Dulce Es) by Joey Pastrana's HOT, and put it on the homepage.

He sampled the section between 48 seconds and 57 seconds, ending it with the same brass break that you can hear at second 47th.

What I was hearing for the very first time was great, and I immediately logged to Descarga in order to buy it.

Well, when I received the CD, can you imagine my disappointment at hearing that what I thought I knew, what MOVED my purchasing intention was... actually different?

Well, here at least what you hear is what you get, yet I am happy that Andres Padua decided to take in consideration also those like me!

What Andres writes, all in all, is sacred too: radio users liked the experiment, Dustin was actually tuned with people, so if people taste is like that, this is a good reason to produce it and I can easily avoid to listen to it.

My fear is that more and more Dj's will now introduce "house music" habits in the Classic Salsa dance environment.

Who knows? Perhaps one day I will appreciate? :D

I don't believe so; sometimes I don't even like some Artists choices, such as the irritating sounds that I hear in Los Calvos track "El Marciano Y Yo" ... and neither in Larry Harlow's Un Tipo Liberado .... which spoil both beautiful songs...

If was able, I would eliminate those sounds!

Dustin, this is a possible tip for you (if you like those songs)!!! ;)

The same way I myself will eliminate some long un-danceable parts of the track I told you about in my first post.

So, all in all also I am a manipulator of other people's creations!

Yet I limit my action to "removals" in order to introduce these works to the dancefloors (and not to make some already-danceable tunes "more danceable").

Cheers

I agree Mambo Italiano.

I fear some DJs will add that house mix to the classics. I may sound ok but again, it's gonna take away from that classic sound.

Thanks Mambonuel. Glad you love Hard Salsa Radio and Latin Soul Show.

I'm guilty of 'removals' too and have worried about it being considered sacrilege by others.

I recently waited with baited breath watching a 'purist' DJ dancing to my edited version of 'El Gran Varon' Willie Colón, he obviously didn't mind me cutting the intro but I was waiting for the response from where I cut the slow passage 3/4 way through :? Felt guilty about it because it's a beautiful part of the song (and the part where poor Simon dies :() but it's not 'danceable'. Anyway, happily the DJ and everyone else on the dancefloor carried on dancing without a flicker of disapproval :D.

I do think this is quite different to adding certain 'special effects' like scratching, echo, looping ect to songs though.

Personally I'm not a big fan of things like El Gran Combo's 'Salsa Classics Revisited' and much prefer the originals but I know other people really like it, therefore I bought it. I do play tracks that I personally don't like if they are popular or there is a demand for them and for that reason the remixes on disc 2 will no doubt be useful to me.

One of the perks of being a DJ is you often get to play your favorite tracks, one of the responsibilities of being a DJ is to listen to what other people like too. :D

Ok i agree with Mambo Italiano... 1 Cd - VERY Good indeed ;-) and CONGRATULATIONS to Duste for chosing all those tracks but....
2 Cd I DO NOT LIKE AT ALL...
In my opinion and i think also in opinion of "verdaderos salseros" (those who not necessary dances but LOVES salsa music...listens to that music) salsa clasica cannot be mixed...It's not hip-hop or regueton...
lots of salsa artists from 60's and 70's, nowaday record with some reguetoneros but they do it for money...and that's it ;-)
The spirit of salsa music is in the instruments not in the decks...
it's not electronic music - it's music made by MAN...
music that goes from their heart...
and thanks to all those things SALSA will maintain as it is - SALSA ;-)
all those solos on timbales, conga, bongo, piano and "vientos" like trumpet or trombone - you cannot play it and mix on deck ;-)
mixing salsa clasica - for me - NOOO ;-)

i don't want to criticise the work of Duste but...the second Cd should be the same as the first - i mean only original tracks ;-)

i hope that i didn't offend anybody - it's only my opinion ;-)

thanks and salsaludos
