Prepping for spins on 2.

As a leader, I've been used to prepping a follower for a right turn by moving the follower's hand from right (on 5) to left (on 6) then to right (on 7) and spin them on 1 for a right turn. This is done in a fluent horizontal motion. But today I've seen the prepping as a vertical (more like a moon cresent), which had me perplex (e.g. I'm so used to prepping in a horizontal motion). Can anyone explain what I'm talking about and if so, what is the count to it (e.g. what is the count when the hand is brought up and down in a vertical moon cresent motion). Thanks!!!

As usual, it's hard to describe moves in writing, but here goes. From leaders perspecitve, leading a right turn On2 with the leader's left hand and followers right hand:

Prepping the turn
On 5, hand is neutral position.
On 6, left hand sweeps downward and to the left in a half-crescent.
On 7, hand sweeps upward so that a full crescent sweep to the top is finished on 1.

Lead the turn
Follower turns on 2

My teacher teaches both preps. Personally I prefer the crescent (or "inverted C" as the teacher calls), but the teacher says the follower should know and be able to respond to both.

I think the crescent/inverted C prep can happen either over 5-6-7 or 6-7 depending on how much time you've got from your last move. Mark the bottom of the arc on 5 or 6 and sweep up to the top on the 7.

When I get a spin prep I'm ready and would expect to start spinning on the 1 (or even the 8 ).

MacMoto,

You are right about when you start the spin, particularly when you intend to do more than 1. Magna teaches the double spin to be done on 8123, So on count2 you are actually pedalling for your 2nd turn.

I appreciate all of the responses to prepping. I'm used to SR's prepping on 5,6,7 and start the turn on 1. And it's more of a flick of the wrist (e.g. 5,6,7 --> right, left, right) where as the cresent/inverted C it's a little longer motion b/c it involves 3 beat (e.g. 1,2,3 ---> bottom to top, 3,4,5---> top to bottom, and 5,6,7 bottom to top) in either directions.

BTW, with the cresent/inverted C, do I have to start the prep/motion on 1, (e.g. 1 is the bottom of the cresent, 3 is the top of the cresent) or can I start on 5. It's pretty nice to know there's more than one way to prep and be flexible with both preps. Thanks!!

As far as I know, the timing of the inverted C prep need not be any different from the side to side prep (my teacher calls it a zigzag prep) and shouldn't take any more time/beats. So yes you can start on 5. It's just a different way of getting to the same point (arm up and ready to polish her halo).
