A friend of mine is flying into Sydney and Melbourne in a couple of weeks' time for a business trip, and being an ever-enthusiastic dancer, would like to check out the scenes and clubs there.
She'll be in Sydney on the night of 3 Sep (Mon) and in Melbourne on the night of 4 / 5 Sep (Tues / Wed). There's a pretty strong Aussie community amongst us, and I'd just like to see if I could link her up with any of you Sydney or Melbourne dancers. Thanks mates!

Melbourne, PM salsa chinita she is super nice and lovely! Knows the scene well!
Sydney, do not know anyone just yet. My friends in Singapore know the guys from http://www.latinmotion.com.au/ pretty well though and say they are great. (LA style)
My friends in Perth who have trained in Sydney said there is a good Cuban instructor there (I know Cubans who have visited saying no, not very authentic but the locals love it).

*disclaimer not sure how updated and their Perth guide is TERRIBLE but hopefully Sydney and Melbourne is better!

Hey, I am only a beginner (bout 6 months or so) but I can tell you some of the popular places in Sydney are:
Watershed on friday nights at darling harbour.
Equilibrium on Sunday nights in the city
The two listed above are both beautiful venues.
Vbar on Monday nights - i've never been to this one mainly because i hear all the advanced dancers/instructors go there so i don't think i'd fit in haha but i've heard awesome reports about it.
Oh these are all populated by L.A style salsa as that is the most popular style here. I'm not sure where to go if you want Cuban.

Ooo I thought that had closed down! I have very fond memories of a night there in 2004 after a week in the desert.

No it's very much alive and kicking!
in fact tonight Jaime and Liz are performing as well as the modus vivendi advanced student team!
Unfortunately i can't make it tonight though so i'm gonna miss out :( but there seems to be performances there fairly regularly. I know Oliver has performed there twice since i started going - once was a solo and the other with Luda.

 Not that I'm all that active in the scene these days... here's my 2 cents:
Generally on Tue & Wed you will find classes with maybe social afterwards.
No sure if Lotus (Toorak Rd, South Yarra) Wed is still happening? That used to be the mid-week salsa fix 8) .
Ooooh, I forgot, Alumbra is now on Wed night (at a new venue too). Might be worth cheicking out.

Speaking of Tuesday nights, the Grosvenor on Dandenong Road in St Kilda has a lively social after the classes (around 9:30pm). For Cuban check out the Exchange Hotel in the City.
And on Wednesday nights we have Lotus in South Yarra. If you come after the class which finishes also at 9:30pm, you will have plenty of people to dance with. Salsa is played until around 11-11:30pm and after that it's just RnB and hip-hop. For Cuban, go to Alumbra on Spencer St.
Of course those don't have as many people as Park Hyatt and Ormond Hall, but can still give you a good salsa fix.
For a full list of classes and regular social events, check out http://www.salsainmelbourne.com/ (if any classes or events are missing, please let me know)

Can I bump this thread?
I will be visiting Melbourne and Sydney later this week and next week and am looking for hot spots to salsa dance. I've tried looking up past threads but I think they are out-of-date as they don't match the current websites I've found. For example, the VBar doesn't seem to be listed on the Sydney Salsa Scene website. There are multiple places to go out every night in Sydney--so please help!
My ideal salsa club (here's hoping that I can get what I like!):
Prefer DJ to live band
Prefer on2 and on1 (cross body lead)
Wood floor
Prefer salsa social environment rather than club/bar environment as I will be going alone
Any leads would be appreciated!
Thank you very much!
