A few months ago, I purchased Salsa Hits 2005. See review here  A Trick CD? (http://www.salsaforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=309)

I actually listened to it a few times and set it aside and forgot about it. Didn't care for it much. It was lacking the total magic of the original artist or a certain artist's touch if they were the original. I didn't even realize "El Nazareno" by Maelo or Roberto Roena's "Mi Desengaņo" were even on there until a read it again today.

It's very rare to find an artist who could bring the same magic or at least a comparably decent remake of certain songs, I think. How about you? Know any good remakes of the classics or just good Salsa songs?

I think El Gran Combo did Mi Desengaņo as well, right, Boriken? Or maybe it's because he was a part of EGC at one time? :? Oh well. I love the song BTW. :D

Hi Peach, long time.

The best remakes, at least for me, are those by people who take time to understand what made the original special and preserve it, whilst adding a twist of their own. It's not necessarily down to just the artist - the arranger and post-recording personnel are the unsung "musicians" behind the tracks too.

A good example is the song "Xiomara" (I forget the original performer. Boriken - any ideas? Tipica 73?), with recent remakes by both Alfredo de la Fe, and Johnny Polanco. Horses for courses, whilst I don't dispute the former's virtuosity, the arrangements in Johnny's are a wonderful revelation and never fail to bring out the best in me every single time.

Have you checked to see if your favourite songs have arrangers, mixing engineers, or mastering engineers in common? You might be pleasantly surprised.

Yeap, It was la Tipica '73 on the Album titled Salsa Encendida.

I think La Soledad sung by Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez in Jimmy Bosch's Soneando Trombon Album is a sweet "remake" of Ismael "Maelo" Rivera's La Soledad.

Tabaco Y Ron has a number of remakes that sound pretty nice...
Rafael Hernandez' Lamento Borincano - which was also remade by Conjunto Clasico with the Late Daniel Santos in vocals!

Roberto Roena's Traicion.
Marvin Santiago's Vasos en Colores...

I love El Conde's "Pueblo Latino" from his Este Negro Si Es Sabroso CD. Also done recently by Spanish Harlem Orchestra's version.
