Dancing and handstands...

Ok so this is a bit out there....:) ....

I did recreational gymnastics for years, could never hold a handstand , maybe a few seconds at best
Then i did yoga, again, couldn't really hold the handstands...

Then I took up salsa about 2 1/2 years ago

I went to yoga class the other day for the first time in about 2 1/2 years and I was able to hold handstands....:o

Do you think there's anything that I've gotten from dancing on my feet that makes me able to hold handstands?

body tension, body awareness, muscle awareness?

It was most bizarre but quite satsifying!

I suspect two things: Dancing and time. Dancing regularly improves our balance and mind/body control.

I had a similar experience playing drums. At one point I was doing lots of business trips and I took a few years off and only played a couple times those years (about 15 years ago).

When I started playing seriously again, I found things that were not solid before my layoff worked really well when I restarted. While I was not physically playing, I was always listening and someplace in my brain things marinated during my time off. There is something about maturing a little that allows you to do some things that were difficult when younger.

Since you did gymnastics for years, I suspect that foundation is still there. The added balance from dancing (new body control/awareness) plus the time, and now it works.

Doesn't surprise me based on my experience.

I definitely would agree with this point, because the same thing tends to happen to me.

Also, increased core control and awareness plays a part in helping you do what you once thought impossible.

And some things much less ! ;) ;)

Maybe yes, but often done with much more style and attention to detail. ;) :)
