Position of the face during a turn

Trying to make my turns look nicer. for example, a single right turn as a guy:

1 head faces partner
2 head still faces partner
3 head turns right (half turn)

4 ??

5 head turns half to face partner again before the step is completed
6
7

is that right?

Assuming you are dancing on1, the leaders single turn will be happening on the 2-3. If you spot your turn, it means that you will still be looking at the partner on the 2, and by the 3 you are already looking at the partner (the head starts turning later than the body but completes the turn before the body). That spotting give your turn sharpness. Really *look* at the partner on the 2 for extra flirtiness. ;)

This is how I learned my spotting. (I changed the counts to fit men's pattern)

Right Turn (on1)
1 head faces partner
2 step to right and look right, up to 1/2 a turn
3 turn on right foot and bring head around to face partner
4 face partner

Left Turn (On1)
1 step forward face partner
2 step back -in place- with slight rotation still facing partner
3 step into left turn looking left up to a 1/2 turn
4 pause looking forward (used to be back before turn started)
5 step forward or sideways -to taste- looking left towards partner
6 step towards partner looking at him/her
7 finish basic step facing partner
8 pause

When I do a left turn (broken left) on the leader's count on1, I'm still facing front on the 3. The head snaps round during the turn and I'm back facing front on the 5.

Sorry... do not understand "broken left" :?

I think what you described is a broken left turn -- it's a left turn starting with stepping forward on the left foot the same way as a single right turn, then switch direction to turn left over 3-4-5 (leader's timing). I've also heard it called "left hesitation".

Yes, that is the kind of turn i described. I did not know it was broken. the forward step does not turn to the right so i would not call it a change of direction but I can see what you mean.

Here in Montreal it is called a single left turn or a left spot turn.

Is there such a thing as an unbroken left turn?

The forward step doesn't turn to the right but the upper body cocks to the right before swinging round in the left turn

Yes - On2 (ET On2) it would be unbroken going to the left; and you'd have a broken right turn.
