I was wondering how many and which are the international salsa competitions..
The ones i know of are

1.Mayan
2.Vaseline Intensive Care Smooth Moves(although i dont know if its international)

Which other you people know ? Which one is the most prestige?I assume MAYAN, but i reckon there should be a "worldwide open salsa" somwhere.

Anyone of you competing at the "UK Salsa Open Championship" this year ?

There are "Tropicana Salsa Championships", which claim to be international but seem to be very much British-based. Janet and Jhesus Aponte won last year's pro comp, and Osbanis's team won Rueda.

Another one I know is "World Salsa Championships" run by Issac Altman's World Salsa Federation. I've no idea how many world/international salsa championships there are or which one's most prestigious.

Anyone have info on the San Francisco Competition? What is the scoring criteria? I have tried to contact the promoters by phone and email, but no one gets back to me.

Thanks saw that already. I am looking for a detailed scoring breakdown for partnerwork, amateur division though. I am sure pros use the WSC scoring.

ie

timing =
musicality =
difficulty =
choreography =
etc

The biggest world-wide salsa competition is the Albert Torres' and the 2008 3-6 December 2008 World Salsa Championships out of DisneyWorld, Orlanda FL.

Qualifiers are run throughout the world, with one being held in Toronto during the 6th Canada Salsa Congress 9-12 October - Columbus Day week-end for the Americans.

Rules and music specifications are posted on worldsalsachampionships. com

Worlds are postponed this year till further notice. I talked to Albert Torres soon after he got the news and he made an offical announcement this weekend at the Canada Congress. Was looking forward to going there.

Have fun! Some of the best advice I can give:
- rest whenever you can
- bring a pair of really comfy thongs (flip-flops i think you call them in the US)
- bring at least 1 spare pair of dancing shoes
- make sure you have lots and lots of fun!

From the same page (sfsalsacongress.com/2008/sfsalsacongress_dancecontest.htm) the break down is:

JUDGING CRITERIA (ALL DIVISIONS)
40% timing*
15% lead /follow (connection with partner)
15% presentation (costuming, overall professionalism)
15% originality
15% choreography / musicality
* for amatuers, they must continue on whatever beat they start on. Must be very clear that they are conscious of the timing.
* for pro division, obviously they have chosen which timing to compete on, so they must dance on the 1 or the 2

You can also consider entering open level J&J on Sunday.

Thanks they just added this info as I checked it just the other day. However now they removed information about international competitors lol. It's impossible to get a hold of Michelle and the other promoters also. I guess I'll just figure everything out when I get there.

I was surprised to see no information posted about that too. If I recall correctly, they do conduct a qualifying round in the afternoon for those wishing to participate in Amateur competition. I think it is on Sundays.

Michelle can be notoriously hard to get hold of at this time of the year even after half a dozen emails and phone calls. Try to post the question on the salsagang website.

She has been hard to get a hold of since July.

From what I read last, International Competitors will qualify at 5pm. Top 3 in each division move on to the finals at 8pm to compete alongside with the San Fran Finalists. I think there will be 6 couples max in the finals: 3 San Fran local couples and 3 International couples. I think that is correct :)

I hope I have time to do the Jack and Jill and watch the Masters Jack and Jill. Would like to warmup and practice before I compete though.
