I'm doing self-imposed research on the music of Salsa. Oh my, I can't believe the stuff that I'm finding. This is awesome:

I heard this slick mambo groove, "Fuego a La Jicotea", while watching video clips one day and flipped. Take a listen to Oro Salsero - Marvin Santiago (which includes this song) Very good music and an amazing voice. I like all the songs on this one. Some favorites are "La Campana Del Lechon" and "La Pela". :)

Cacheondea is also sung by Jimmy Sabater former singer of Joe Cuba Sextet. This version was re-released last year by Son Boricua whom Jimmy sings with.

One great re-discovery is knowing that before Graciela, sister of Machito recorded "Ay Jose", the great Mirtha Silva recorded it with La Sonora Mantancera. It was something I simply forgot.

hi -

i saw the classic RAN KAN KAN listed up earlier in the thread, and have been having some trouble finding the version i want.

on a Puente collection i just bought, the vocals are by Vicentico Valdez and Vitin Aviles - it's the cut that originally appeared on MAMBO ON BROADWAY. that's not the version i wanted, however.

the version i want has different vocals, slightly different lyrics, and two distinctly slowed-down percussion breaks in the middle of the song.

can anyone help me identify/locate this version? thanks.

Descarga.com produced a compilation of 17 Salsa CDs called "Gladiadores De La Salsa." The CDs are available separately, but can be obtained in a set of all 17 CDs.

I own the entire collection. According to Descarga.com, "This complete 17-CD package is, quite possibly, the most killer single collection of salsa ever compiled. Packed within the 17 CDs are all-time salsa legends..."

Obviously, their claim is huge, but I am glad that I obtained the series. There are some real gems found in them. Below I've given you all the artists and titles:
