OK - so I have a confession to make. I am cheating on my lover. My lover in this instance in salsa - yes, I am starting to see other dances. My heart is still with salsa - I'm just having an affair. I'm haivng an affair with west coast swing (WCS). I saw WCS for the first time last night - it was good, but not as good as salsa.

I spent the first hour of my night doing WCS and then I went to the salsa club. It was sort of a trip to go from one very unfamilar place to an extremely familiar place.

I have been taking WCS classes for a month, I'm not sure if this is a long term affair or just a meaningless affair. We will see.

Ooooooohhhh... Dude, you're gonna get it! :o Is it possible for Salsa to be jealous? Hmmm....

Ssshhh!! Don't tell her! I don't want her to get jelous :)

Its funny - the people in WCS are like, so when are you going to convert completely? (They didn't think it was too cool that I was leaving WCS early to go salsa dancing)

And the people at salsa are like - are you going to give up salsa?

:D I think it's good that you're doing both though. Nothing wrong with being a versatile dancer. I wonder if they are other WCS dancers here?

I'm not WCS dancer, but I've done some WCS and actually find it the closest dance to salsa as far as how good partnering actually works.

sometimes in a long term relationship, Cheating is good... because you get to try other things, break the routine, and feel renewed. but you always always go back to wut you loved. and Salsa is a lifetime partner!

I did a term of Lindy Hop at the end of last year and I started Ceroc a month back.

It's all good :D It all helps one another.

Though, salsa is the one true mistress ...

Cheat? You mean... you aren't in an open relationship??? :P

Jive looks tempting - although having seen members of a local group demo recently, it looked relatively easy compared to salsa. To the point where after 5 mins of watching I think I had clocked most of the differences and was thinking about jumping up for a go!

And from what I have seen of ceroc, well, I think I have developed a bit of a snobbish attitude - the average ceroc video on youtube just doesn't look as good as salsa.

So my affair continues. I have noticed that ladies ask guys to dance a lot more in WCS. I pretty much can sit on the side and wait for ladies to ask me. Its kind of nice. I will ask ladies once in a while - I generally only ask ladies that I know, I feel a bit bad being such a beginner.

The cool thing is that I have found a some people who cross-over. I met one lady who is well versed in WCS but only does salsa once in a while - I was thinking of asking her to help me learn WCS and I can help her learn salsa - that would be a lot of fun!

I admit it... I've had serial affairs!

First with Merengue.. she tied me all up in knots.
Then Bachata moved her hips and I was lost to the beat of her heart.. she was hot and sexy! I'm still seeing her from time to time. It's not over yet.. Mmmm I remember Tango.. she was classy and sultry! She leaned on me for a while but after three dates I dropped her for West Coast Swing. How could I?
What can I say, she really swung me over to her side and we just fell in line together.. but, maybe you know the type of girl.. she was always trying to convert me to her way of thinking and in the end it got too much and we had to break back to get some space for a while.

Recently I've been seeing this other latin girl, on the other side of Bachata. She's from Brazil. It's a new affair and so exciting! Sometimes she's like a forbidden fruit and other times she's sensual and graceful. Recently she's been opening up to me and when we're together at night.. all I can say is it's like we're two waves moving together. Apparently she's got a surprise for me tonight and mentioned something about a 'whip'!

Well, I'll just be careful. As long as my Cuban and Puerto Rican girlfriends don't find out. It took a few years but we finally all get along in the same house and I'm not sure how they'll react with more latin competition. I might not have the energy to keep it up! ;)

Totally agree! It's so nice to be asked ALL the time instead of a few times a night in Salsa.

I have a love hate relationship with Merengue. Sometimes I don't want Merengue there, and I want to get back to Salsa. Other times, Merengue is such a good time and a nice break from the norm.

Bachata walks in and out of my life so often, I just don't know where I am! Bachata is great, but sometimes when she comes around, I just can't find the right partner to enjoy her with. Then it's as if she wasn't even there.

Salsa is always there, sexy, fun, challenging, comfortable and always different. Not sure anything could beat that combo!

I'm tempted to flirt with Tango, she looks like a classy lady. Ceroc just doesn't look that attractive, but I think if salsa ever left, and I was desperate... no... I'm better than that (no offense to anyone who has been there and done that intended... but come on...). Modern Jive looks like a lot of fun, but just not quite as sophisticated as Salsa.

I am continuing to take classes in WCS. This is my 10th week. I have finally decided I don't like the instructor of my classes - yes, its taken me 10 weeks to figure this out.

I have been struggling in classes - I have finally figured out why.

I don't like his teaching style. He teaches without a partner, he will shows the men's footwork to a pattern and then the ladies and then he will stand off to the side and expect us to do it right. Then he will chime in - you guys are doing it wrong, you are supposed to be putting your left foot here and right foot here. I am thinking to myself - well no sh*t buddy, you can't expect us to get it right if you only show us twice and don't even walk us through the footwork :(

So unfortunately I found only one other instructor who teaches group WCS classes - she is on the other side of town - it really wouldn't work for me. So I am not sure what I am going to do. Do I continue with this guy who frustrates me cus I have a hard time learning from him? Give up? Take private lessons? As of right now I don't know???

Ooo - no one answered this. It's a form of modern jive that emerged from France.

Pretty basic steps as far as I understand and can be danced to most popular music.

HHmmm, sounds like the closest thing we have to that in the US is Blues dancing.

Ceroc, my friend, is the evil empire attempting to take over the UK.
It's aim is to produce rough leads with plenty of moves and tricks but no timing who venture out to salsa venues and inflict pain on unsuspecting salseras .

... Just joking! But it's true that my experience with guys who say "I dance ceroc" hasn't been great...

Ceroc is the bastard daughter of Le Roc (French Jive) and Commerce (Ceroc can be trademarked whereas Le Roc can't). She also produces follows who swing uncontrollably around their axes and expect always to be spun the opposite way to the direction they were last spun. They invariably tell me I would be good at Ceroc and you can do it to ANY music!

And I've Ceroced to Grace Kelly and Toxic.

What I'm saying is that all the old salsa hands rubbish Ceroc. Just as all the Lindy Hoppers rubbish Jive.

But they're all valid dance forms and enjoyable - as I found out when I started LindyHop and then Ceroc.

I wouldn't dare have an affair, you know how twitchy Salsa gets if you even talk about her sister Mambo or her cousin Cumbia. I would come home and find my jazz shoes being boiled on the stove!

That said, there's a haughty Argentinian woman who keeps catching my eye. She looks a bit frosty but there's something beguiling about the way she looks over her fan at me...

Just a word of warning about her, if you're thinking of a one night stand she can play 'hard to get' but she could intrigue you enough to want to go back and try again, before you know it she'll get under your skin and you'll be hooked.
