Here's an exercise that works. Pop in your favorite Salsa CD when you get in your car. While you're on that long (or short) commute to work, keep your hands on the steering wheel at 10 and 2 o'clock or 9 & 3 o'clock. Make sure your seat is close enough to keep your arms bent. Keep your hands still and move your shoulders in a circular motion, going forward and then back in line with the music. Do not include the steering wheel in your shoulder movement! We don't anyone having a wreck and we want to keep the movement in the shoulders, not the arms! ;)

Check in with the results & share what you discover.

.....Now if only I had a car...

Thank goodness, this was after your almost 3 hour commute last week. Your shoulders would have been quite sore.

Anyone try this? Did it help somewhat? Yes, No? Why not? What's the verdict? Please share. :D

:car: I tried this a while ago and it worked fine. It felt like a really good exercise. :D It also forces you to only move your shoulder, if not, something baaaaad might happen...

I know a friend who do belly dancing and her teacher told her to practise on her shoulder movement in a similar way. I don't remember exactly how, but I think it was about placing your hands on the back support of a chair and then trying to move your shoulders back and forth.

Has anyone else tried any of these exercises or maybe any other way to improve your shoulder movements :?:

It could have been placing your hands at a wall or holding in a table. :? I don't remember... I believe more in the wall thing, becase the back support thing doesn't feel any good... With the back and forth motion of the shoulders, I mean that the left and right shoulder shall go in the opposite direction.

I will ask her again about the details next time I see her if I remember... :)

No matter what you grab on to--or don't grab on to--a few days of practice with all-directions shoulder moves adds some real spice to your dancing. One should do not just the rolling movement but also up and down, back and forth.

So--
1. Shoulders up and down (both and separate)
2 Shoulders back and forth (both and separate)
3. Should rolls starting front and going all the way around to the back (both and separate)
4. Shimmy--slow and fast

If you've mastered the torso isolation moves, add the shoulders to that sometimes and see how that looks.

What I often do is pick and exercise of the week and do the hell out of it whenever I get the slightest chance. By the end of the week, the movement's improved remarkably. Also, pick a song, and just do the basic or a few simple moves and start accenting the music with shoulder moves. You know--you aniticpate or hear something in the music and you do a shoulder move to coincide with it. It could be a shimmy, a quick roll, or just bringing the shoulder forward what you're dancing at an angle for an attitudy look.

Another good move is: left shoulder rolling forward, right shoulder rolling backward. And vice versa.

Peach, I do the car thing all the time. :D Also good to lean against a wall with your hands.

Oh! Just trying the alternate shoulder roll too. At the office (hope no one catches me at it). It certainly feels nice.

Try this:
step to left foot, rolling left shoulder forward, right shoulder backward.
close feet, rolling both shoulders backward (a little smaller)
step to right foot, rolling right shoulder forward, left backward
close feet, rolling both shoulders backward (a little smaller)

Looks nice in the mirror.

Today I met my salsa friend who takes classes in belly dancing and I asked her about how to practise on shoulder movements (that I have written about here before but wasn't shure about the details.) The correct way is moving the shoulders while both hands are placed against a wall. (It was not her belly dancer teacher who told her this as I first thought, but another belly dancer student ...)
