I like the medium tempo salsa, lots of horns, but manily trombones and baritone sax. I like a doze of heavy percussion, but not lengthy. The more the songs allows grooving and time to flirt with my partner the more I like it.
Ahhhh, something like Vagabundo from El Gran Combo. :D

Slow-medium to medium speed for me! :D
I like to be able to dance to the music, not have to just run from step to step...

I love the sound of a full orquesta :D !
Tempo: medium to medium slow, nothing too 'happy' (ie cheesy, party type). "Idilio" is about perfect.
In the last year or so I got into timba. IMHO you need to dance with a very distinct style/flava, and really listen for all the accents & changes in one song :D ! Great fun, but I may not always be able to get the right leads to dance timba to its justice......

Medium tempo, vibes (I LOVE the vibes), a great piano hook, brass (gotta have brass!), and heavy conga ::sigh:: :D Tito Puente's "Asia Mood" totally fits that bill.

:? Ok.......if ALL of us like medium tempo salsa, no doubt a lot of others also feel the same.
So why in the heck do we get so much turbo stuff out there  ........?
There must be enough people into that speed for the DJs to keep playing, no?

I'm gonna stick my neck out here and say, what I look for is variety. My taste in salsa music is very eclectic, and although I do like medium tempo salsa, there are also many faster songs I love dancing to. Some of my favourite songs are classics while others are very new and "hip".
A varied set allows you to try different styles of dancing with different leaders. With some leaders I love dancing to sensual mid-tempo classics, but there are also leaders who are great fun to dance turbo salsas with, so I want both. Some songs are made for dancing with Cuban style dancers, while others are great for LA style. What I don't like is the same sort of stuff throughout the night -- a night that doesn't go above the 2nd gear is just as disappointing as getting too many turbo salsas and wild descargas.
Tonight is my favourite salsa night, and one of the things I like about it is the DJs. The team is very good at reading the dancefloor and always comes up with a varied and interesting set.

I love medium-tempo salsa too and want quite a bit of that when I go dancing, but after your post MM I started thinking about my best nights out...My best ones had a variety of salsa music styles. The type of connection one gets is different between one style and the next and it is a thrill to be able to have many different wonderful experiences this way. :D

Musically, I love them all.
It's just that I'm not a fast girl  so I look sloppy doing turbo songs slot style (simple grooving/freestyle I do ok). Generally the faster the tempo, the simpler/smaller steps & moves I keep.
As long as the DJs don't play *almost* identical tracks all night, I don't mind if there's a bit of 'theme' to their taste. Of course, depending on the calibre of leads present of the time.......so the music match their dance style & moi can follow accordingly 8) .
If you are lucky enough to get a DJ who 'reads' the dancefloor well, you got your night made :D !

Me too, SC. But I'd rather have them slower as well. I love a lot of Africando stuff and particular love the stuff from seventies and eighties. Mostly the Fania stuff. Still searching for good music though. There is so much out there. :)

Mambo and Son Montuno. A Guajira is always nice to dance to. I miss dancing to Charanga. Charanga is on my list of things to do for July.

I guess it all depends on the leader... if he is good (i.e. my partner) I just looooooooooooooove dancing with him, doesn't matter the beat...
BUT: fast Salsa is reserved for him.... he's the only one I enjoy dancing to such music with... otherwise... I have other leaders I like... BUT: they have to like dancing with me...
yep, medium tempo for me as well, although i like faster tempos with the right partner

I did one turbo salsa on Sunday night. Reminds me why I don't really like doing it. :( It was the only salsa played at the milonga and so I didn't really have much choice. :(
Medium tempo all the time, time to groove, time to play. :)

I like dancing turbo Salsa with my partner! It's exciting! And we do all these cool moves! But my favourite is also medium-tempo Salsa... one has time to include styling...
