I have been taken salsa dancing a couple (literally 2) times, and I love it- however I just moved this winter to San Diego and I know nothing about the city.

I was wondering if there were any suggestions for classes and/or clubs that I could check out- I really want to learn more...!

While I'll second the La Jolla Mariott as your best bet for Friday or Saturday nights, unfortunately the amount of actual salsa being played at the LJM has continued to decline abysmally, now totaling about a third of everything played at best. (The other 2/3 include merengue, cha cha, bachata, regaeton, and, on very rare nights that the DJ needs to be smacked upside the head even more than usual, disco).

David Stein from Majesty in Motion is excellent, but my #1 recommendation would actually be the Friday night teacher at the LJM (David teaches there on Saturdays), Jemadean Haynie of Salsa Pasión (see salsapasiondance.com).

As for another venue, the Belly Up Tavern (in Solana Beach) has Sunday night salsa on a sporadic basis (you'd have to check their on line calendar), but is probably the best real salsa venue left in San Diego these days (i.e. 75+% of the music is salsa, there's a very large beginning class, there are people to dance with at a variety of levels, and the floor is excellent).

I've been going back to the LJM for the past month and I agree! What is going on? I guess they are doing what attracts drinking guests rather than dancing guests? I have not heard one song that I want to dance to - that is really bad. Not only is the music bad, the sound system is distorted. Last week it was distorted and too loud. I asked for my money back. Not sure if I will be going back.

Here's a little about my experience at Club Miami.

I don't believe it has a Puerto Rican feel at all (don't be mad Anthony). A Central/South America I'd say instead.

The band was good when I was there!

So what do you guys think of Iran Castillo, of Son y Pasos? I think he is an awesome dancer, and his moves are so original and different.

Check out the La Jolla Marriott on Friday and Saturday nights....
